S4 Duke of Edinburgh Expedition

DOFE Arrangements for Thursday – 28th Sept

Can all DOFE students on their expedition tomorrow (Thursday) meet at Barrhead train station at 9am – please do not meet at the school.
Travel Arrangements

On Thursday, half of the group will travel to Greenock in the minibus, the other half by train – accompanied by Mr Weir.

On Friday, the students that travelled to Greenock by train will return in the minibus, and the other half of the students will return by train accompanied by Mrs Kirkpatrick.

Students should be back at Barrhead train station by 3pm (although it could be earlier).

Costs

The cost of each DOFE expedition is normally around £20. This covers the cost of hiring minibuses/ transit vans, diesel, gas for the trangia stoves and any sundries that students require (suntan lotion, aftersun, soft drinks and food if students are dehydrated or cold).

Where the total cost of an expedition is lower, monies will be returned.

Organising our expeditions in this way allows us to keep the costs to a minimum, and is considerably lower than other secondary schools in ERC.

School Trips Letter – a significant correction!

NOW WITH THE REVISED LETTER ATTACHED BELOW

A letter was issued today confirming the trips that we are going ahead with for this session. This should allow pupils / parents to decide on which trip they are interested. More information will come out from individual trip leaders in the near future.

Unfortunately there was a typo in the letter – the Ski Trip will not be  £150 as indicated – it should have read  £750. Sorry to those who thought they were onto a basement bargain!

The  prices of all trips are still estimates at this point – the individual trip information will give a more accurate price – although in some cases the final cost can still depend on uptake.

The Premier Trip has increased in cost as they are now looking at a 2-day trip with 2 football games and an overnight stay.

There is a slight increase in the confirmed price for the Watersports Trip and for clrification, we are offering the Strasbourg Trip although this (like the others) will depend on the intereset shown.

BHS – Maths Week Scotland 2017

Maths Week Scotland

Welcome to Maths Week Scotland, a brand new initiative to help everyone in our nation see maths more positively.  Our aim is for everyone to experience the benefits, joy and beauty of maths in exciting new ways.

Mindset

To encourage all students to think of maths as an interesting and brilliant subject, we have been watching some short maths videos:

  1. Video 1
  2. Video 2
Junior School

This week our junior school have been enjoying some problem-solving tasks in Maths. If you fancy having a go, try calculating 62 x 33 using Chinese Multiplication (watch the first 30secs of the video only).

In addition all S1 & S2 students have been given SUMDOG logins to allow them to compete in the Sumdog – Maths Week Contest.

Senior School

Senior students have also been working on problem-solving skills involving NRich tasks like A Square of Numbers. They have also been enjoying some very competitive games of Kahoot.

S3 DOFE Group

The S3 DOFE Group had their first meeting last Friday, 8th Sept.

If you missed the meeting and still want to get involved with dofe this year, can you please come to a short meeting in Mr Boag’s room (202) at 12.30pm on Friday, 15th Sept.

S4 – Duke of Edinburgh Group

The S4 DOFE Group have their assessed expedition on the 28th & 29th Sept.  Students should meet at school on Thursday, 28th Sept at 9am with their rucksacks packed and ready for a day of hillwalking.

Students will be accompanied to the Barrhead train station where they will travel by train to Drumfrochar train station. Students will therefore require a small some of money to purchase a train ticket.

All kit will be issued from The Edge community centre at 5pm on Tuesday, 26th September. Students will require to hand over a £50 deposit – either cash or cheque – before collecting their kit.

Students should reflect on how much food/kit they brought with them on the practice expedition in June and adjust according.  Similarly, all food should bought as a group and shared with those in your tent. Remember to pre-cook any meat!

Can all S4 DOFE students see Mr Boag by Friday, 15th Sept so that I am aware you have seen this message. I also need you to complete the final piece of paperwork too.

See the New Building – this Wednesday 13th Sep

Parents are invited to have an informal tour of the new building this Wednesday 13th September. Drop in between 6 pm and 8 pm. S6 pupils will be there to take you around and let you see our incredible new facilities. You will probably need 20 – 30 mins to see all of it.

This is not a formal open evening showcasing pupils, curriculum, etc. That will still take place on Wednesday 22nd November.

However we thought you might not want to wait until then to see what your son or daughter has been talking about!
