Virtual Conic Hill

It has been great to see so many people taking part this week! If possible, try to get your walk done by Sunday and ask your child to post a photo on the Conic Hill Google Classroom.

Well done to Mrs Hepburn who is our first parent to complete the challenge. She walked an incredible 7 miles around the Dams to Darnley Park!

And Miss Shaw and Mrs Drewett were our first members of staff to complete the challenge. Miss Shaw walked around the Clyde and Mrs Drewett climbed a local hill.

Kirstie Stewart in S2 was our first pupil to post her walk – she walked her dog around Barrhead.

We can’t wait to see more photos and posts about your walks!

LEARNING & TEACHING IN BARRHEAD HIGH SCHOOL DURING COVID

The pupils and staff of Barrhead High School have achieved some fantastic results in creative new ways as they worked together to beat the impacts of the COVID school closure.

The video below shows some of the Learning & Teaching work which has been taking place – it is well worth a watch!

And when my retirement finally kicks in, I want to become Callum’s agent – all orders should come through me!

Virtual Conic Hill Walk 2020

Our annual Barrhead High Conic Hill walk has become a Barrhead tradition over the last few years. This year, we cannot head to Balmaha as a group but it seems a shame to miss it, so Mrs Wallace came up with the idea of a virtual hillwalk – that is what I call thinking outside the box!

We agreed it would be fun to attempt a virtual hillwalk and in the spirt of our mental health and wellbeing week last week, we are encouraging everyone to get active and to take part.
Your challenge is to walk the same distance as our Conic Hill walk or climb the same height over the next week – or both! Conic Hill is 2.5 miles or 4.02 km. It has a height 361 m (or 1184 feet). So, if you really want to challenge yourself, you could use your stairs (there are lots of steps on the Conic Hill walk!). Mrs Wallace’s house stairs are 6.45m so she will need to go up and down them 623 times!
Remember, this is a Barrhead High community event so we are looking for pupils, staff, parents and friends to take part in the challenge as usual!
Pupils can join in on the fun by heading to our Conic Hill Google Classroom: v3yjx2g
We would like you to complete the challenge by Sunday 7th June and post a photo or screenshot of your walk on the Google Classroom page (for staff and pupils) or email/tweet them in for others. (Strava is a great free app for recording walks/runs/cycles). We can’t wait to see the photos of your walk on the page or on the school Twitter feed.

Hopefully we can collate a video of this year’s virtual walk too!

Since the first Conic Hillwalk for the Nepal earthquake, we have used the walk to fundraise for charity. We will identify a relevant charity in these COVID times (suggestions welcome) and we will set up a parentpay account for this. Pupils can seek sponsors from family and friends for their efforts or those who cannot take part physically can make a donation if they choose – details to follow.

Are you up to the challenge? Let’s all go for it.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK – The End … or just the Beginning?

The official Mental Health Awareness Week has come to an end.

Over this week you have been asked to focus on 5 areas under the overall banner of KINDNESS:

Thank you to all who sent something in to show what you have been doing. We hope this gave you some positive thoughts, ideas and activities in the difficult times of COVID-19.

The video below will give some good memories – but remember, this is the beginning – take what you have learnt with you now and let it make a difference to you and to those around you.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK – Day 5 – GIVE

Hope you found something new and uplifting to LEARN yesterday and that you’re feeling positive. The final focus this week is GIVE because when we GIVE, we often feel good about ourselves. You don’t have to spend money to GIVE: you can offer to make someone a cup of tea or give a compliment to everyone in your house. Check out the list for more ideas and remember to send in your pics.

Enjoy GIVING – and good mental health.
