A team of S2 pupils went to St Luke’s High School last week to take part in the Faraday Engineering Challenge Day,
competing against the other ERC secondary schools. The challenge for the pupils was to build a mechanical system which would be controlled electronically and was capable of moving a cup of water a distance of 20 cm. There was an emphasis on team work and how well they worked together. Our team consisted of Ross Nisbet (Team Leader), Christopher Patrick (Accountant), Kerry Gubbins and Fraser Lundie (Electrical Engineers) and Scott Maneely and Nicola Miller (Mechanical Engineers). They first had to create a design sheet then buy the necessary materials from a shop, managing their budget carefully. The equipment then had to be built and a video was created. They were interviewed about their work during the building process and then finally had to demonstrate their manufactured product to the other groups and the judges.
