Course Outline
The Advanced Higher English course is a challenging and rewarding course for those who have a love of literature and language. It bridges the gap between school and university with small group discussions, presentations and much independent study.
There are four main areas of work:
(1) Literary Study: study the works of authors , including Seamus Heaney, John Donne, James Joyce and Harold Pinter.
How will this be assessed?
You will write one critical essay in your exam.
(2) Textual Analysis
How will this be assessed?
You will be given an unseen extract from poetry, prose, non-fiction and drama texts in the final exam to analyse.
(3) Dissertation: choose two texts (more if poetry) and write a dissertation comparing their similarities and differences.
How will this be assessed?
You will submit a dissertation (2500-3500 words) which will be sent off to the SQA to be marked.
(4) Folio: write two folio pieces from the creative and discursive genre. The writing can be from the following types: persuasive, informative, argumentative, personal/reflective, poetry, prose fiction, drama
How will this be assessed?
Both pieces will be sent to the SQA to be marked.
