‘The House Divided’: The USA 1850 – 1865

A study of the causes, course and consequences of the American Civil War. Areas covered include –

 

• American society in 1850.

• The changing nature of the institution of slavery.

• The problem of territorial expansion.

• The emergence of Abraham Lincoln.

• The outbreak of war.

• The soldiers’ experience of war, the campaigns and the fighting.

• The Emancipation Proclamation and its consequences.

• The economic and social impact of the war.

• Assessment of the reasons for Northern victory and Southern defeat.
