P6a were looking at food labelling system and the amount of sugar per 100g/ml. Some very shocking surprises with BBQ sauce coming at the top of the list and some fizzy drinks coming closer to the bottom! They measured out caster sugar to see the actual level of sugar in each item/100g.
Today we have been testing which substances dissolve in water. We discussed the variables which we needed to keep the same and the variable which we changed. Next time we will be changing two variables.

P6 took their trip to the Scottish Parliament as part of their social studies topic on politics. We learned all about the history of the newer Scottish Parliament as we as the longer history of Scottish politics. We also learned a lot about the design of the building and how the architects added symbolic meaning to the design. Can you spot the Saltire?

The gardening group looked at our outside area at the back of the school. We cleared up many of the leaves and litter which was lying around before making birdhouses ready for the spring time! Hopefully our garden will be blossoming come April!
Today primary 6 went to Scotland Street Museum to experience what it was like to be a Victorian child in school. It was really scary! There was a real Victorian teacher there. She was very strict and petrified most of us. We had to line up smallest to tallest in silence and then we were ordered into class by the aggressive teacher. We learned our times tables, the alphabet and handwriting.
We did complete the lesson with a fun activity with the Victorian Janitor! Thank goodness we live in the 21st century.
P6a have been debating with the adults on child labour. Using the rights of the child they created argument why children should not be used as a cheap labour source in a factory. We also discussed health and family implication of these. We’ll done for some well argued points!

Primary 6a have been looking at artifacts from the Victorian era. We discussed what the items looked like, what they could be used for and created questions about them. We were able to work out some of the answers to the questions through discussing them in a small group. We also thought about the modern day equivalents of these items. Can you guess what any of these items are used for?

P6a have been learning about our very own artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh. We found out that he came from Glasgow but was more appreciated in Europe during his lifetime. For these drawings we looked at the specific shapes which Mackintosh used. We also used the effects which he used to create flowers. Can you spot any features of Mackintosh in our drawings?
We are also planning an educational visit to Scotland Street School as part of our Victorians topic.
