STEM WEEK 2024

STEM Week 2024.
We had a great time yesterday with SmartSTEM team. We were learning about engineering and renewable energy and looking at wind turbines. We were set the challenge of building our own wind turbine models with only 1 paper plate, a newspaper and a strip of sellotape. The children worked really hard in their teams to build their turbines.

Unfortunately only 3 of the groups kept their models to bring back to the class.  😥

The winning design is the wind turbine in the middle of the photo.

Our Busy Week!

We have had an incredibly busy week.

On Wednesday we visited the Sky Academy Studios in Livingston and found out about the type of skills and jobs you need to have to create a news broadcast. Then we actually got to create our own broadcast on climate change. Which was brilliant! Mrs McG, was very proud of us. We hope our parents/carers all enjoyed watching our broadcast on the link they were given.

On Thursday we visited he Vue Cinema in Hamilton to watch ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’. We all loved the film and are looking forward to writing reviews of it next Monday.

P.E.

We have been enjoying working on our hockey skills with Miss Agnew in P.E. We have been passing and dribbling the ball and playing small team games.  We were also working on our ball handling skills during our indoor P.E. lesson last week. We were passing rugby balls to each other and following the rugby rules on how to pass the ball.

We are very lucky to have Emily in our class who is a keen hockey player to demonstrate a lot of the skills for us. We also have keen rugby players Callum and Owen who showed us how to pass the ball in rugby.

Baking in P5

We have been doing a lot of baking recently as part of Mearns Masters. We have made shortbread for the Burns Celebration, we baked Bannocks after hearing the story of the “Wee Bannock” and for our final baking lessons we have baked fruit scones. The children have all really enjoyed baking and so far the favourite item we have made are the bannocks!

I hope our families have managed to enjoy some of baked goods too!

All recipes can be found on our Google Classroom.

Ada Scotland Festival

The Ada Scotland Festival is on this week and our class enjoyed taking part in the first live assembly on “Tech for Sport”. We found out about all the ways technology is used in sport from designs in clothing and foot ware to helping sports people improve their performance and to things like goal line technology and even VAR.
We then designed our own sports ware with some tech devices built in.
