S3 Woodwork

Practical Woodwork

What will you do in S3?
At the beginning of the S3, you will start by practising a number of the assessable woodwork joints. This is to help prepare you for making the following three models:
– Tea Caddy
– Mirror frame and stand
– Toolbox

Each of these units is designed to gather evidence to help your teacher decide on your presentation level, should you choose to continue with the subject in S4 so it is important that you make a good job of these! You will develop a number of hand skills over the course of S3 as well as learning how to safely set up and use a variety of machines.

Throughout the year you will have a number of theory periods and you will also be expected to complete weekly written homework exercises. This is to prepare you for the exam in S4. You will also spend a lot of time learning how to read a working drawing and how to gather sizes from them to make your models. Much of the practical assessment is based around your ability to interpret drawings as well as your ability to measure, mark out and cut to a given tolerance.
