Tracking Pupil Progress

Monitoring and Tracking of Pupil Progress through Personal Learning Plans

As with all subjects at Turnbull High School, pupil progress is regularly monitored to ensure that each and every child is receiving adequate pace and challenge to allow them to realise their full potential. This is done through the recording of pupil achievements within their Personal Learning Plan (PLP).

Within the English department, at all levels, each pupil has their own profile. This is normally a paper document that allows pupils and teachers to record the elements of the course that have been covered to date and how successful the pupil was in achieving set targets, as well as planning for further development.

In S1-S3, the pupil PLP in English is made up of the following:

  • An A4 writing jotter and good work folder which will contain evidence of all assessed work. This will journey with the pupil as they move throughout the junior phase.
  • Individual feedback/target sheets for each task or assignment. These will include the Es&Os and assessment Benchmarks associated with the piece and will clearly highlight the success criteria used by teachers, allowing for quality feedback to pupils/parents.
  • A comment sheet for parents to allow them to take an active role in their child’s learning journey. We encourage parents to regularly provide comments/feedback on their child’s work.

In S4-S6, the pupil PLP in English is made up of the following:

  • A profile sheet outlining the various elements of their specific course, along with the unit assessments covered throughout the year and a record of their achievement within the prelim examination. Pupils will update this regularly, as and when they finish topics/units.
  • A target sheet, where pupils will be encouraged to set individual goals related to their course work and review these throughout the year.
  • Individual feedback sheets for each task or assignment. These will clearly highlight the assessment criteria used by the SQA and department staff, and allow for quality feedback to pupils/parents.

These documents can be viewed, by request, at any time, however will be sent home regularly for parental signature and comments.

While staff will monitor and encourage pupil completion of the PLP, it is their responsibility to do so.
