S2 pupils this week developed their Numeracy skills in Geography as they used scale drawings to calculate how many times the UK would fit into Australia.
They then answered complex numeracy problems involving accuracy, percentages, ratio, and formulae for population densities.
S2 student Lewis Fraser is enjoying reading the novel ‘A Medal for Leroy’ by Michael Morpurgo with his mentor, Jenna Fraser. Lewis describes the book as a ‘dramatic mystery’ about a young boy and his family dealing with identity and loss.
Medics Against Violence aim to prevent violence before it happens. Medical professionals have visited our S6 pupils this week, using their experience to help young people stay safe by giving them an understanding of the consequences of violence and how to avoid it. Our S6 pupils have started their training to become Medics Against Violence (MAV) Interns. Following this in depth training, pupils will visit our S2 classes during PSE to deliver lessons on reducing violence and staying safe.
This week our S3 PE studies classes have been evaluating team and individual performances in basketball using the iPads. Following this, teams will identify weak areas within their game before working on a training programmes to improve. Well done to all pupils who have been working so hard.
Mathletics is now up and running for all pupils in S1 to S3.
So far, 35,840 points have been earned and over 52 hours in total have been spent answering questions and improving Numeracy skills.
The leaderboard shows the pupils with the 10 highest points (in alphabetical order). Remember Activities earn you more points than Live Mathletics. Well done to those pupils who have made it to the board this week!
Congratulations also to everyone who has earned a bronze certificate! There are 37 new certificates already this week to be handed out on Monday. Remember you need 1000 points in a week for your bronze certificate.
Mathletics club is on every Monday lunchtime in room 2.2. Anyone who doesn’t have log-in details yet should see their Maths teacher or Miss Brockway.
National Poetry Day on the 28th of September is fast approaching, and to celebrate Boclair Academy is holding a poetry writing competition for all pupils in S1 – S3. Boclair’s Literacy Champions will be launching the competition at next week’s assemblies. Watch this space for further details.
The Paired Reading programme began this week, with 30 of Boclair’s S6 pupils mentoring their S1 and S2 literacy buddies to help develop reading skills. S2 pupil Emma Forey and her S6 mentor Jo-Anne Alexander have been reading the novel Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo this week. Emma had this to say about the book: “It’s different from other books I have read because it’s set during the First World War. I’ve just started it, but I’m enjoying it so far and looking forward to finding out what happens to the characters.”
