Welcome back
We are so happy to welcome all of our returning children and families back to the centre. We are also very pleased to meet and invite our new children and families to Whatriggs ECC.
On this page we will share a variety of literacy experiences that the children have been taking part in during their day. We love to share why these are beneficial to your child’s learning and development to share the value and importance of these with yourselves.
Nursery Rhymes and Book Bug Sessions
Week beginning 13/9/21
Some of the benefits of these activities for children:
- Hearing the language and rhythm of the words, songs and rhymes.
- Practice and repetition helps children to learn, remember and recite these rhymes and songs.
- Developing children’s vocabulary and ability to use words to express their thoughts and feelings.

Mark making in sand
Using a variety of tools such as paint brushes, spoons, pebbles and fingers, to mark-make and practice pre-writing skills.

- Copying a pattern
- Drawing a shape
- strengthening your fine-motor skills (small movements in the muscles within the fingers and hands)
- Can you trace your finger in the sand in the shape of a letter?
Exploring letters and our own name
- The children used post it notes to explore different letters and looking at the difference between capital letters and lower case letters.
- Can you find any letters that are in your name?
- We can explore the difference between a letter and a word (pre-reading skills)
- Matching the letters that are the same.
