Snapshot Week

Primary 4/5 have been having a very busy week, here is some of the things we got up to!

Music

We are so lucky to have Miss Hill come and visit us every Monday to teach us Music. This term we have been learning about string instruments, and have been learning to play the cello, viola and violin. This week we were super excited to use our bows for the first time.

P4s Trip to Dumfries House.

Primary 4s had a fantastic day out at Dumfries House, learning all about farming and the different processes that brings our food from the farm to our home.

See Mr. Cavani’s P3/4 update for more information.

P5s and P3s – STEM Day and Sharing the Learning

While our P4s were learning all about Farm to Fork at Dumfries House, our P5s and P3s worked closely  developing their teamwork and digital technology skills.

We started the morning using KNEX and Lego to build impressive structures. We enjoyed using a mix of KNEX and Lego and collaborated well with others.

Afterwards, the P3s were introduced to Microbits, and learned how to code images and sounds onto them. The P5s took this opportunity to support our P3s and share the learning. Some of the P3s challenged themselves to recreate some of the P5s’ previous coding projects – such as creating a Rock, Paper, Scissors game!

Finally we brought out our beloved Spheros and created obstacle courses, mazes and race tracks for them to complete. We loved trying to complete other people’s courses and had great fun trying to make them as tricky as possible. While some groups were using Spheros, others were continuing developing their coding skills – this time using Scratch!

Ascension Thursday

The whole school enjoyed our visit to St. Thomas’ in Muirkirk to celebrate Ascension Thursday. We learned from Fr. Philip about why this is such an important day in the Catholic faith.

We are very grateful to the parishioners and Fr. Philip for welcoming us to the parish hall afterwards for some juice and snacks.

Library Visit

We are so lucky to have the Boswell Centre and Library so close to us! This week we visited our Library and took out some new books for us to read. We love visiting the Library and agree that it is a fantastic way to encourage us to read some more.

Literacy

In Literacy we have been finishing reading The Treasure of the Loch Ness Monster. We have loved reading all about Kenneth and Ishbel and their exciting adventure to Urquhart Castle. This week, we reflected on our book, and wrote reviews about it. Lots of five stars from this class!

We also continued working on our new phonemes this week! We enjoy reading our Phoneme Stories and highlighting words that contain our sounds. We have been working really hard with the organisation and presentation of our work.

Numeracy

The Blue group have been continuing learning about fractions – this week we have been learning all about finding a fraction of an amount. We enjoy using manipulatives and using our knowledge of division to help us with this.

The Purple and Green group have been working hard reviewing addition strategies. We used our place value dice to create our own calculations.

IDL – Australia

This term we will be learning all about Indigenous People and Australia. On Tuesday, Mrs. Evans told the class all about her recent trip there. Primary 4/5 love a good research project – and had fun researching all about Australia!
