This week P2 have been revising the phonemes ‘oi’, ‘ow’ and ‘ou’.

In writing we have started to create a book about our characters.  This week we focussed on describing the characters and where they lived.

This week we have been using arrays to help us multiply.  P2 used arrays to write repeated addition and multiplication calculations.  There was also lots of times table practise.

We continued to work on identifying 3D shapes too.

Learning across the Curriculum

Camembear visited us in class and told us about some different French foods. P2 didn’t think they would like the taste of snails! P2 also told Camembear about some Scottish foods they thought he might like.

P2 have been reading Katie Morag stories. They worked together this week to create a map of  the Isle of Struay and included places they had read about in the story ‘Katie Morag Delivers the Mail.’  We will add other places we discover as we read more Katie Morag.

Weekly Round-up 23/01/26

Literacy

This week P2 have been learning the ‘oi’ phoneme as in oil, boil and toilet.  We have also been practising our common words.  Our new common words this week were walk and want.

In writing we have been using the Mr Men books as inspiration to create our own characters which we will using in the coming weeks to write a story about.  They created some fantastic characters including Mrs Hug, Mr Smart, Mrs Chocolate and Miss Princess.

Katie Morag’s cousin Rona has also been helping P2 to compare things and join sentences using the word ‘but’.

Numeracy

P2 have been playing lots of multiplication games this week, writing multiplication calculations and finding equal groups.

We have also been learning about 3D shapes including spheres, cylinders, cubes, cuboids and cones.  They enjoyed sorting 3D shapes, building a castle with some of the 3D shapes and then writing down how many of each shape they had used.

Learning Across the Curriculum

In PE the pupils have been learning to play hockey.  This week they learned how to do a push pass and practised this using lots of different games.

For our Katie Morag topic P2 have been  learning about the Isle of Coll.  After exploring Coll using Google Maps last week, this week we compared the features they had found with Catrine, to find which things were the same and which were different.

Scots Verse Competition

Tomorrow (Tuesday) pupils will be saying their Scots poem ‘The Dinosaur’ in class.  We have been practising in class but please could they have a wee practise tonight.  There is a link to the poem below.

Literacy

This week P2 have been learning the ‘ou’ phoneme as in mouse and house.  They also practised their new common words your and going.

We have been reading and watching Katie Morag stories and P2 drew and labelled a picture of Katie Morag.  They also wrote a description of her during their writing lesson.

P2 also explored fiction and non-fiction texts and worked as teams to sort different text into these categories.

Maths

We have continued to focus on multiplication this week.  We have been learning about repeated addition and have  been finding equal groups and adding them together.

We have also been learning about  2D shapes, exploring how many sides and corners a shape has to help identify what shape it is.  The pupils really enjoyed playing a game of shape bingo to finish off the lesson.

Learning Across the Curriculum

As part of our Katie Morag topic we have been learning about its author Mairi Hedderwick.  She used to live on the Isle of Coll and used this as inspiration for the Isle of Struay in the Katie Morag stories.  P2 explored the Isle of Coll using Google Map Street View and found that Coll had a primary school, Post Office, shop, doctors, airport, ferry terminal, hotel and a war memorial.

We also used the Katie Morag story ‘Katie Morag Delivers the Mail’ to identify  different feelings and how other people might feel in different situations.  We talked about what happens when we are embarrassed and talked about times when we felt embarrassed.

In French, Camembear helped us to learn about the French and Scottish flags. We learned how to say the colours red, white and blue in French.

Learning Across the Curriculum

We have started reading Katie Morag and this will be used as a stimulus for our Scotland topic.

We also created some Saltires and thistles in art as they are symbols of Scotland.

Below is a copy of our Scots poem ‘The Dinosaur.  A copy was sent home with each pupil but if you need another just let me know.

I’ve also included a link to a video that the pupils have been using in class to help them learn it (it says bairns instead of weans but the pupils know that they’ve to say weans).
