P1 Literacy Home Practice

This week we are learning the sound <n>. This is the last sound in our first set of sounds and we will be spending a week or two revision all of our six sounds that we have learned so far. We will also continue practising sounding out and blending CVC (3 letter) words.

Here are some activities that you could do with your child at home to practise this week’s sound:

  • Make the letter n with things that you find around the house and garden, like coins, paperclips or rocks. Please work with an adult as these items may be quite small and could be choke hazards.
  • Use a white crayon to write the letter n all over a piece of white paper. Then use some watery paint to paint the sheet of paper and reveal your letters!

I have also issued another board game this week. This game practises all of our sounds so far. Enjoy practising your literacy work this week!

Our Week

This week we have been learning new sounds in Primary 1, new spelling words in Primary 2 and we have been practising our numbers.

Primary 2s have started to look at numbers to 100 and we have done a lot of number formation in Primary 1. We are also practising number recognition. Everyone has worked really hard in maths this week!

Primary 1s learned the sounds i and p this week. We practised letter formation and started some blending, too! Primary 2s have been working hard on sentence writing. We try to write a sentence every day and did a great job with writing our news on Monday, too.

We have been enjoying different play activities in our classroom throughout the week. We practised painting using sponges and made beautiful pictures of our pets. We also improved our cutting skills. We also had a scavenger hunt to find pictures starting with our different sounds.

On Friday, we had a chance to spend time with our buddies who had organised some brilliant games for us. We had a super afternoon with them. Thank you buddies!

P2 Literacy Home Practice

We have been busy revising our phonics from last year, starting with <ch>, <th> and <sh>.

This week we are looking at <ee> which the children have been finding a bit tricky. Here are our spelling words for this week:

You can practise these words at home. Primary 2s will receive a wallet with a whiteboard, a pen and a rubber on Tuesday that they can use for some of the activities below. The following are suggestions to practise spelling words but please feel free to practise in whatever way works best for you and your child. Please click on the image below to enlarge:

P1 Literacy Home Practice

This week we are learning the sounds <p> and <i> in our Literacy lessons.

In addition to reading with your child every day, you could do some of the following activities if you wish:

  • Think of things that begin with the letters p and i and draw them.
  • Rainbow write the letters p and i – pick a handful of different pens, pencils or crayons. Write the letters with a pencil first and then ask your child to trace them with different colours, multiple times.
  • If your child comes along with you to do the food shop, challenge them to find as many different fruit and vegetables as they can that start with the letter p.
  • Play letter detective by searching all of the <i> and <p> in a book or a magazine.
  • Practise all of our letters so far (s, a, t, p, i) by drawing a letter on each others backs with your finger and guessing which letter it is.
  • Sing along to our phonics songs: for the letter p and for the letter i.

Your child has also received a new literacy game to practise the new sounds. Have fun practising!

This week in P1/2

It’s been another very busy week in our classroom so this class update will be a bit lengthy, sorry.

We start every morning with different play activities that help us to practise some of the things we are learning in class at the moment. Some of our activities develop our motor skills and help us to practise turn taking and being kind.

In maths, P1s have been practising counting and we have started to practise number formation. Primary 2s have been revising numbers to 20. This week we have been looking at number words.

This week, Primary 1s learned the sound <t>. We have been doing lots of phonics work and have been practising to write t. Primary 2s have been practising sentence writing and have been doing a super job. We have also started Our reading and I will set up our new reading groups online as soon as possible so that you can practise at home.

We have been enjoying our P.E. lessons in particular. We are practising throwing and catching, team games, competitive games and have been improving our skills in station work.

On Friday afternoons, we get a chance to work with our big buddies. We may do sports activities outside or activities inside that develop our social skills and practise some of the things we have been learning in class.

Phonics Practice

Primary 1s are practising <s> <a> and their new sound <t> this week. Primary 2s are revising <sh> <ch> and <th>.

To practise, you can play our “Spin the Sound” game. This is all about identifying the initial sound of the pictures on the board. We have been practising the game in class so your child should be able to share with you how to play it and how to spin the paperclip around the pencil tip.

P1 Home Activities for Literacy

Dear Primary 1 parents,

We have been learning the letters s and a this week.

In addition to reading with your child daily, here are some fun letter activities to do with your child at home if you want.

  1. Put some dry rice, sand, shaving foam or similar on a baking tray and encourage your child to write the letters s and a with their finger.
  2. Make the letters s and a with playdough. You can make playdough yourself – here is a simple playdough recipe .
  3. Alligator starts with a. Roll dice and snap like an alligator that many times.
  4. Go for a walk and see if you can spot the letters s and a on signs and posters.
  5. Look at the pictures below. Practise saying the word and listening to the first sound. Encourage your child to identify the pictures that start with an a and those that start with a s.

Our Teachers

This year our class has two teachers who work with us when Mrs Kane gets her planning time.

Mrs Cunningham works with us on a Monday afternoon and we do P.E. with her.

On a Friday, Mrs Rooney does STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) activities with us for a little while.

The children seem to have enjoyed their time with Mrs Cunningham and Mrs Rooney this week and we are looking forward to many more fun activities with them.

Literacy

Primary 1s and Primary 2s have been working hard in Literacy over the last two weeks. Here is what we have been learning and doing:

Last week, Primary 1s learned their first sound – <s>. We have been practising writing the letter s in different ways. This also helps us to develop our fine motor skills. 

This week, we learned the sound <a>. Again, we practised letter formation but we also sorted words starting with s and a, and we practised reading our first sentences.

We looked at how to read a sentence – put our finger underneath the word we are reading (on the big black dot) and read from left to right. We use picture clues to help us.

Primary 2s have also been busy revising their sounds. We explored sh, ch and th over the last two weeks. We sorted words, made a sh booklet and practised reading words with these sounds. We are also learning more about capital letters and wrote our summer holiday stories!

I’m looking forward to another exciting week of literacy in our class!
