The Heritage Centre – Cumnock

Primary 5/6/7 went to “The Heritage Centre” which is based in Cumnock for a visit on Tuesday.

They all had a wonderful time listening to the volunteers explaining what certain items were. The “old” phones and school belt were a “hit”! Many of the pupils were fascinated by the steamroller and the roadman’s caravan.

Leaflets with all the information about the Centre were given to each child after the visit – phone up and arrange a visit!

Mining in Ochiltree with Davie Reid and Brian McGhie

P5/6 and P6/7 were delighted to welcome Davie Reid and Brian McGhie into the class to talk about their experiences of being miners in Ochiltree.  Davie and Brian brought lots of memorabilia which they were kind enough to let us try on and explore.  They shared stories of what life was like working in the Killoch and Barony pits and what life was like in Ochiltree during the Miner’s Strike.  Pupils loved listening to this fantastic piece of their history and enjoyed asking lots of questions!  A huge thanks to Davie and Brian for taking the time to share their stories with pupils.

Mining with Mr Renton

As part of our Ochiltree topic, P5/6 and P6/7 have been learning about mining in the local area.  We have been looking closely at the Barony and Killoch pits and learning about what life was like as a miner.  We are incredibly lucky to have our very own Mr Renton as a primary source who spent a few years working in the Barony.  Mr Renton took to the hot seat to share his experiences of life down the pit with the pupils.  Thanks again Mr Renton – we especially loved all of your gruesome tales!

P2/3 and P5/6 Time Connectives Fun

We have been learning lots about time connectives over the last few weeks to help us with our instruction writing. We have played fun games in class, used them in our writing and finally made our own board games to help us practise time connectives at home. Before we take our games home though, we thought we would practise playing them with P5/6. We all had great fun hearing some of the amazing sentences using time connectives that we came up with!

P5/6 and P6/7 Explore Ochiltree

Primary 5/6 and Primary 6/7 have began to explore Ochiltree as part of our new topic.  Last week, we created a mind map and discussed what we already know about Ochiltree.  Today we all went out a walk to explore key features of our local village including houses, businesses and monuments.  We noted some interesting facts and will use this information to stimulate further discussion about our village.  Many thanks to our parent helpers who came along!

P5/6 Blowing Bubbles

This morning we had a go at blowing bubbles within bubbles!  We snipped pipettes and used these as our bubble blowers.  We then dipped these in the solution to blow bubbles within bubbles.  We tried to beat the P6/7 score of 3.  After a few attempts one of us managed to get 4.  It was such tricky task trying to carefully add a second bubble without popping the first!  We all had a great time – have a look!

P5/6 Learn About Online Safety

This week we discussed how to keep ourselves safe online.  We looked at different scenarios and did a carousel activity sharing how we would respond to each of the scenarios safely.  We also had lots of fun creating ‘perfect passwords’ and discussed how to keep our accounts safe.  We also had a look at trolling and used the toothpaste experiment to illustrate this.  The toothpaste represents the words we choose to say to people.  We then tried to take all of our words back by scraping every single bit of toothpaste back into the tube.  After LOTS of mess we discovered that we could not put all of the toothpaste back.  This made us realise the weight of our words and even if we take them back they can still have a lasting effect on someone.   Have a look!

P5/6 Class Job Rewards

You may have heard that in P5/6 we get paid for completing our class jobs, showing kindness to others and taking initiative in our learning.  Pupils can save their money and choose to purchase one of the class prizes that we agreed on in August.  Here we have Libby and Jess who saved up to bring in their Jolly Jumps to incorporate into our P.E. lesson. Here we have our class enjoying sharing Libby and Jess’ hobby with them!
