Covid Recovery and Teaching Mathematics within Blended Learning models
During the COVID – 19 lockdown there has been a huge amount of teaching resources developed to support teachers, learners and parents with on-line and blended learning in numeracy and mathematics. Research and guidance on blended learning emphasises the importance of collaborative planning of learning, teaching and assessment across learning episodes:
‘When planning for learning, teaching and assessment ensure that you focus on the learning outcomes before the methodology. The principles of highly effective learning, teaching and assessment apply to blended learning to the same extent as in-person teaching. Practitioners need to have a good grasp of how to plan for high quality learning, teaching and assessment as this will allow them to match individual learning tasks/activities to either in-person or online slots appropriately. Making decisions about the technology should be the final step in your planning process……….. collaboration with peers and the sharing of good practice will reduce bureaucracy as well as allow practitioners to share and agree standards. Support for Planning, Learning Teaching and Assessment in a Blended Learning model
In this section some of the best resources, approaches and sources of inspiration in relation to numeracy and maths will be shared. More links will be added as/when they are become available:
Education Scotland, e-Sgoil, the Association of Directors of Education in Scotland (ADES), the Scottish Government and Regional Improvement Collaboratives (RICs) are working in partnership to increase the support available nationally for e-learning and you will be able to access that range of support here.
The National e-Learning offer complements the online learning being provided by schools, local authorities and RICs across Scotland.

Anytime Learning Videos
A suite of video snippets have been designed to complement the Numeracy Professional Learning Resources published in August 2020. More videos will be published and hosted on this site as they become available. These videos and the East Ayrshire ‘How to..’ Videos videos help to support the development of using manipulatives and pictorial representations in learning across key concepts in numeracy.

Mathsbot
Mentioned in the above webinar is www.mathsbot.com Mathsbot provide a digital version of concrete manipulatives used in numeracy and mathematics to support learning. This could be a useful resource for children and young people where access to concrete manipulatives are difficult and for teachers wanting to demonstrate the development of a concept using manipulatives.

Maths Through Stories
The East Ayrshire SAC Team have created a number of planning frames to support planning, learning and teaching in numeracy and maths through the context of a story. These teacher planners have been adapted with parent and child versions available. These planning frames for learning at Early and First Level have proved very popular with teachers, parents and pupils.

Flipped Learning in a maths context
Scott Morrow is a PT Maths (Primary) in South Ayrshire and has provided a model for flipping the learning and an example lesson he has used with a group of learners in this format on his YouTube channel:

Oak National Academy
Oak National Academy is an online classroom made by teachers, for teachers. Their free, high-quality video lessons and resources are available throughout 2020/21. With an uncertain year ahead, these videos could be used to support and ease your remote and in-school learning. Set up for the English education system these resources are a useful support to planning learning, teaching and assessment across subject areas within the Scottish curriculum.

Exemplification of ready-to-progress criteria – PowerPoints
These PowerPoints, which will be added to over the coming weeks, include links to relevant resources and pupil-facing activities. They are ideal to be used with small groups of pupils to support review, practice, and consolidation.
The pupil activities are intended to stimulate interaction and discussion. We suggest you use them flexibly and are guided by pupils’ response, repeating activities where pupils lack confidence. When using these for Covid curriculum recovery or at the start of a year, you should use the materials from the previous year group.
