Primary 6 have been developing their knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages by using a dice roll activity to create percentages and then write the equivalent decimal and fraction. They have also being using card matching games to consolidate their learning.
In Science, P6 have been learning about air and water resistance and streamlining. During ICT time they researched different animals and vehicles that demonstrate streamlining.
To further investigate air resistance they worked in teams and built parachutes to investigate the effects of surface area on air resistance and speed. They then tested them in the stairwell. It was also a good opportunity for the pupils to think about safety whilst carrying out experiments.
The theme for this years anti-bullying week is One Kind Word. The class have been complimenting each other on everyday small acts of kindness and writing acts of kindness that they have seen or have happened to them on post-it notes to fill up our class ‘Bucket of Kindness’.
We have also been exploring different types of bullying that can happen and the effect they can have on people using mind maps. They pupils also used Hot Seating to explore scenarios where bullying might happen and how the individuals involved might feel. It was a great opportunity for the pupils to practise their drama skills pretending to be the characters involved.
The JRSOs and P6 were getting creative this afternoon designing posters for the forthcoming Road Safety Week and Be Safe Be Seen Day.
Here are some of our works in progress …
We had some fun with fractions this morning using Skittles. The pupils calculated what fraction of the packet each colour was. They also found equivalent fractions for each colour of skittle.
This week the pupils have been learning about equivalent fractions. They created a fraction wall to help them to find fractions that have the same value.
They also used their multiplication skills to create fractions rainbows by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number.
There were lots of spooky goings on in P6 with a class full of amazing costumes. We even had a visit from Mr Blobby!
The class also used spooky Halloween words to create fractions for the number of vowels in each word.
The class also enjoyed creating ‘big mouth pumpkins’ for the decorated pumpkin competition and the used their pupil voice to vote for the one they thought was the best.
P6 have been developing their rugby skills this week in PE. We have been concentrating on our passing, ball handling and teamworking.
On Tuesday we had another live Columba 1400 Leadership Academy session. We linked up via Teams with other Primary schools in East Ayrshire including Catrine, Ochiltree and Muirkirk and explored the Columba 1400 value of Awareness. The pupils learned that awareness involves knowing and understanding yourself, other people and your environment. They discussed what values are important in friends, family and community as shown in the jars they created below:
Pupils also discussed and decided on 6 core values that were important to them and designed a shield to display these values.
