Hockey

Primary 6 have been playing hockey in PE over the past few weeks.    They have been working hard developing there dribbling, passing and shooting skills.  We have  also worked on defensive tactics and tackling your opponent.

Children’s Mental Health Week

This week is Children’s Mental Health Week (7-13 February 2022) and the theme is Growing Together.

Primary 6 had a class discussion about emotional growth and how they can deal with new and challenging situations.  They talked about important people in their lives that can help to support them and how important it is to talk about your feelings.

Here are some of the support balloons they created showing people important to them that  act as their support network.

Flag Friday

To celebrate Flag Friday, Primary 6 have been investigating the flags and languages of the countries of the Amazon Rainforest.

As part of our rainforest interdisciplinary learning, the pupils worked in small groups to research the countries, their flags and languages and then present their findings to their classmates.

January Highlights

Here are some of P6’s January highlights.

Columba 1400

The class participated in the Columba 1400 Leadership programme again.  This time the focus was on the value Integrity.  There was lots of discussion about what integrity means and how they can demonstrate integrity in school and the wider community.  The pupils also created Welcome to Our School leaflets or posters focussing on different aspects of the school community.

Outdoors they carried out a trust building, blindfold maze activity. They worked in teams to create chalk mazes in the playground.  One team member was then blindfolded and the others had to guide them around the maze safely.

Burns Celebration

P6 studied ‘To a louse’ by Robert Burns as part of our Burns Night celebrations.  We discussed Scots words and their meanings, created visualisations of ‘To a Louse’, as well as designing our own tartans in ICT to use as a back drop for some Scots Words Pop Art!

Congratulations to our Burns Poetry competition winners:

1st : Bruce Guild

2nd : Ciara Biggs

3rd :  Arran Johnson

Gymnastics

In PE, P6 have been taking part in gymnastics and developing their balancing skills.  Here are some pictures of the partner balances they created.

The Explorer

This week the pupils started reading our new class novel the explorer by Katherine Rundell.  They focussed on their inference skills, finding evidence in the text about the main character Fred.  This evidence was then used to create a character file with details on his appearance, how he was feeling at the start of the book and some of his character traits.

Here are some examples below.

Columba 1400 – Creativity

Last week the pupils participated in another Columba 1400 leadership session live on TEAMS with other primary schools across East Ayrshire.  The pupils discussed the value of creativity and what it means to be a creative leader.  They discussed influential people including Greta Thunberg and Andrew Robertson and how they showed creativity in their leadership. They then practised their own creative skills.

The used their creative communication to take part in back to back drawing activities where one person described a drawing to their partner who then had to draw it based on the description given.  They pupils really enjoyed this task – here are some pictures of the results!

They also used their imagination to be creative and write a story based on a storyboard with only 4 symbols.  They brainstormed as a class to generate ideas about what each symbol could be and then co-created a paragraph telling the story of the symbols.
