The pupils had fun today visiting Dumfries House as part of the Boswell Book Festival. We learned about James Boswell and also had a tour around Dumfries house. We then had the opportunity to listen to the author David McPhail tell us about his new book and ask him lots of questions.
As part of the upcoming Walk to School Week and our Columba 1400 leadership project, P6 have decided to tackle problem parking around the school.
The class worked together to create slogans to encourage parents to park away for the school gates and created posters that will be making an appearance soon…
We have been trying out some new creative spelling activities, including building our words with Lego and using spelling outlines to create pictures using our spelling words.
P6 have been learning about number sequences and patterns over the last couple of weeks. They have been finding the rule that describes the pattern for a sequence of numbers and have used their own rules to create number sequences. We have also explored square numbers and Fibonacci sequences that occur in nature.
Here are some pictures of what we have been up to.
P6 have finished off a display for their interdisciplinary learning (IDL) on The Rainforest. They researched rainforest animals and then created a Sway presentation of their findings. We made QR codes and added these to our display so the pupils could access each others presentations and find out more about the other animals.
The display is very vibrant and colourful – well done P6!
Today we had a visit from some of our local farmers and agricultural engineers. The pupils loved interacting with the animals and finding out more about jobs within the agricultural industry.
They pupils have been enjoying World of Work Week – well done Mrs Clarke for organising!
On Monday we had a video call with Vattenfall and RJ Macleod who are developing the South Kyle Wind Farm outside Dalmellington. The pupils asked lots of great questions about the types of jobs available and the qualifications you would need to carry out some of the jobs.
Later in the week we also had the opportunity to ask lots of questions to authors Shirley Husband and Lindsay Littleson.
Our call with Shirley Husband inspired us to create some of our own McCoo art and rhymes.
It was primary 6’s turn this week to create a display for the Rights Respecting School notice board. We researched Article 40 : I have the right to get legal help and to be treated fairly if I have been accused of breaking the law.
This lead to lots of discussion on what the pupils thought the age of criminal responsibility should be and how children who have broken the law should be treated. We created a word cloud of our ideas and also set the classroom up like a courtroom with a judge!
As it is World of Work Week the pupils also explored the different job roles within the legal system.
As part of our rainforest IDL, Primary 6 have been finding out about South American countries. They were very interested in the ancient Incan site of Machu Picchu in Peru. This learning inspired them to create Incan symbols that they then engraved into styrofoam sheets to create block prints of their designs.
