LITTER

What we’re doing to engage in EAC’s Litter around Schools Campaign to educate on the environmental impact of littering and inform of potential consequences of littering.

Our 2025/26 progress:

EAC Litter Around Schools campaign

EAC Litter Around Schools campaign PowerPoint was shared at our whole school Get Together and revisited throughout the session when standards had slipped.

KSB Environment Review findings

Clean Green Litter Team created posters to display in key areas of school as identified in our Environmental Review. This in turn prompted our Captains and Prefects to be more vigilant at these areas and support us in addressing littering when it occurs.

Spring Clean Scotland

Whilst our community litter picks did not go ahead due to difficulties with PVGs and being able to secure parent helpers, we used this as an opportunity to focus on our playground litter, ensuring each class had the opportunity throughout the session to support this ongoing issue.

Playground litter pickers

As we were focusing on prevention rather than clean up, we tried an informal approach rather a forced approach to keeping on top of litter in our playground by placing the litter pickers in a central location for anyone to access should they see any litter during break. This seemed more successful and encouraged collaboration.

Playground bins

We have sought support from Cleaner Greener Communities to purchase new bins for our playground. We have a budget of £300 which was gifted to us from OnPath Energy and the Clean Green Team agreed this would be a good use of this money.

Harriet the Hedgehog and Planet Protectors

Our ECC and P1 class enjoyed a visit from Hannah Willow who delivered the Harriet the Hedgehog resource.

Our learners also contributed to gathering evidence for the Planet Protector Award as they:

  • Learned about the danger of littering for wildlife
  • Recycle paper, plastic and food waste in our classrooms
  • Recycled water bottles to make rain gauges to measure rainfall
  • Ran a uniform swap shop
  • Started recycling bins in the staffroom

Next steps:

  • Organise community litter picks.
  • Ensure delivery of new playground bins.
