Butter MakingBEST Homemade Butter Recipe (Make Your Own Butter in 5 Mins!)

When P4 visited Burns’ Cottage, we had a challenge to make butter using a whisk or a brush to beat the cream to turn it into butter.

Back in class, we wanted to make butter again.

This time we used…

an empty milk carton, a pot of double cream and a pinch of salt…nothing else.

We poured the cream into the bottle and got shaking…

(We even had a wee bit of Swifty’s ‘Shake it Off’ to help us along!)

Eventually the cream separated into solids(butter) and liquids(buttermilk).

We added some salt and gave it another good shake.

Then we poured off the buttermilk and cut open the cartons to get to the butter.

We patted the butter dry with some kitchen towels, wrapped it in greaseproof paper and popped it into the fridge to harden up a bit.

Later on we tried out our homemade butter on baguette, pancakes and croissants and guess what?…

It tasted just like REAL butter!

P.S. We didn’t let the buttermilk go to waste…Mrs Burt took it to make buttermilk scones and pancakes YUM!

We went into the last room which was used as a living room, bedroom and kitchen.

We went back to the workshop and had a go at making butter using a whisk or a brush.

Lastly, Jackie took us along Poet’s Path and told us the story of Tam O’ Shanter.

We also met a fox and a giant moose!

On Tuesday 6th, we  headed down the street to Burns House Museum to see where Burns lived when he stayed in Mauchline.
