NUMERACY

Continue with your sumdog challenge this week. You might find a coin reward on sumdog if you’ve been logging in 🙂

TRIANGLES

FRACTIONS

Yesterday we were looking at shapes that have two equal parts – we call these HALVES.  Today we are looking at shapes that can be split into 4 equal parts. We call each of these parts QUARTERS. When you think about halves and quarters think about a clock. When its half past – the hand is half way around the clock. When its quarter past the hand is a quarter way around the clock.

Click the link below for an introduction to quarters.

quarter powerpoint

Your task today is to take out this worksheet from your pack – its similar to the worksheet you used yesterday. It has a number 2 at the top.

With supervision – Carefully cut each shape out and experiment with it by folding each shape in half and then half again. When you unfold it you should have 4 equal parts. We call each of these parts a quarter, 2 parts would be 2 quarters, 3 parts would be 3 quarters and 4 parts would be 4 quarters which is the same as 1 whole!

Do you know how many quarters you need to make 1 half?

The answer is 2.

You can use your ruler to draw two lines on your shapes to show the quarters and you can cut them into 4 equal parts then stick them into your jotter.

PLACE VALUE

Today we are going to be looking at the value of a number. We have talked about this in class before, during number talks. The two phrases we talk about are quantity value and column value.

Today we are going to look at the quantity value.

Click the powerpoint below to learn about quantity value and your task for today.

WRITING

Today we are going to use our newspaper plan to create our newspaper report. I really enjoyed reading through all of your plans and your headings were all very exciting and catchy!

Please click the link below so you can see what I am looking for. If you don’t have access to print this out, don’t worry about writing it all out. Just keep looking back at it so you can make sure you have covered all of the points.

Success Criteria for Newspaper Article

Here is the template you can use. You can copy this roughly into your literacy jotter. Use your plan to help you, you did all the hard work yesterday writing your plan so now you are just writing it out in full sentences adding a little more detail- remembering capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

You are reporting what has already happened, it Is in the past, we call this past tense.

Have a great day boys and girls. 🙂

FRACTIONS

Yesterday we were looking at sharing quantities into equal groups. Today we are going to be looking at splitting shapes to make two equal parts.

Here is one whole circle.

Here is two halves. If we we put these two halves together it makes 1 whole.

Your task today is to take out this worksheet from your pack – it has a number 1 at the top. With supervision – Carefully cut each shape out and experiment with it by folding each shape in half. If each half is the same size/shape then they should be equal.

NOT EQUAL

EQUAL

You can draw a line down the middle like I have and you can carefully cut them in half to check they are both equal. Stick them into your jotter when you have finished.

CIRCLES

 ODD AND EVEN NUMBERS

Today we are looking at odd and even numbers. In our house we always have lots of odd socks!

Below is a bundle of odd socks – they don’t have partners.

Now that I have paired them up, they are no longer odd.

Lets try again with these odd socks…

Oh no! I have one odd sock, it does not have a partner!

Below are counters from 1 to 10. If you can pair the counters – its an even number, if you can’t it is odd.

1 is odd

2 is even

3 is odd

4 is even

5 is odd

6 is even

7 is odd

8 is even

9 is odd

10 is even

You can try pair up different quanties with any objects you have in the house. A quick way to remember what an even/odd number is, is below.

Even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 regardless of how many digits they have (we know the number 5,917,624 is even because it ends in a 4!)

Odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9

Click the link for a task to do. You can copy this sheet into your jotters.

The Loch Ness Monster

THE LOCH NESS MONSTER HAS BEEN SPOTTED IN LOGAN PRIMARY!! Take a look…..

Tomorrow we are going to create a newspaper report about this exciting sighting but first we need to plan out what we are going to write. Have a look at the following link and fill in your plan. You can re write this into your jotter. I have completed one as an example. I’m not looking for lots of writing – just little notes that will help you when you come to write it up tomorrow. Tomorrow you will add more detail.

HOME LEARNING 13.01.21

Good morning Primary 2/3! I hope you are all well, keeping safe and had a lovely holiday. I am really missing you all but hopefully it won’t be long till we get to see you. In the mean time we will continue to set your work online. Please don’t worry, all we ask is that you try your best. Please email me if you have any questions about any of your tasks.  If you haven’t picked up your pack you can collect it from school today. The school is open every day Monday-Friday.

Please send me in any of your work, if you can send pictures that would be great, or even a little sentence by email to tell me how you are finding the work – I’d love to see how you are getting on. Have a great day!! Mrs Webb 🙂

IDL

We are going to be exploring the topic Scotland this term. We have created a grid of activities for you to work through at your leisure.

Scotland IDL

NUMERACY

I’m having issues setting work on sumdog at the moment. Will get that sorted so I can set some challenges for you all. In the mean time you can still go on and practise your numeracy.

** UPDATE – problem sorted so you should have a challenge waiting for you. It might not come up straight away but it will be in tasks. 250 coins up for grabs!! You have untill Wed the 20th to complete **

If you have forgotten your login details, get in touch and we will get you logged in.

Below work has been set for each maths group, if you have forgotten which group you are in then just give me a quick email.

You can use the blue squared jotter for all your maths and numeracy work. You also have a button wallet inside your big pack. We will use items in these over the next week or so.

In your packs you will all find a white A4 piece of paper that has 100 squares on it and a packet with counters and a dice. This is so you can create your own game of snakes and ladders. Start at number one and  go all the way to 100. Draw your snakes and then draw your ladders. Make sure they start inside a square and finish inside a square. Remember you go up the ladders and down the snakes. I have made one as an  example – click the link below.

snakes and ladders

Play against someone in your house – can you get to 100 first? Good luck!

TRIANGLES

Before the holidays we were looking at quantities up to 100 and sharing that number equally. We talked about how this is like dividing. Can you remember what the dividing sign looks like? It’s like a subtraction sign with a dot above and below.

Free Icon | Divide symbol

For this activity you will need to get your large pack of counters out and your white board and pen. If you have not collected your pack yet don’t worry, do you have anything other than counters you could use? Toys, lego, sweeties, pencils.

  1. Count out 12 counters and share/divide them into 2 equal groups. You can split your white board into the number of equal groups asked e.g. for two groups draw a big line down the middle or draw two big circles. Once you have shared them – make sure each group is equal.
  1. Count out 21 counters and share/divide them into 3 equal groups.

  1. Count out 24 counters and share/divide them into 4 equal groups.

  2. Count out 15 counters and share/divide them into 3 equal groups.

  3. Count out 30 counters and share/divide them into 2 equal groups.

  4. Count out 28 counters and share/divide them into 4 equal groups.

  5. Count out 18 counters and share/divide them into 2 equal groups.

  6. Count out 8 counters and share/divide them into 4 equal groups.

  7. Count out 27 counters and share/divide them into 3 equal groups.

  8. Count out 16 counters and share/divide them into 2 equal groups.

CIRCLES

In your pack you have a blank laminated 100 square. Fill this in with your whiteboard pen and use this to help you with this activity. If you do not have your pack yet just use a bit of paper.

Before the holidays we had started counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Today we are going to recap this. In your pack you also have a blank laminated number strip.

When we count in 2’s we start at zero and add on 2 each time. Circle every 2nd number on you 100 square to help you count in 2’s. I started this one below to show you. Canyou go all the way to 20?

Now do the same and count in 5’s  from 5 – 50. Adding on 5 each time then counting in 10’s from 10 – 100 – adding on 10 each time.

WRITING

You can use the large purple lined jotter for all your literacy and writing work. You also have a button wallet inside your big pack for literacy. We will let you know when you need to use something from this.

Over the next few days we will be creating a newspaper report on something exciting that has been spotted around Logan! If you have any newspapers around the house, have a little look at them and see if you can spot any of these features.

  • Headline
  • Sentences/Paragraphs
  • Pictures
  • Date
  • Reporters name

Thank you, Mrs Webb 🙂

Good morning everyone!

I hope you are all feeling good and ready to get busy! I was really pleased yesterday to get some lovely emails with your work in them. The drawings you did of yourselves really made me feel happy 🙂

Please get in touch by email to show me how you are getting on with the work. It’s really important for me to see what you’ve managed when planning what to do next. Parents please remember that we need to see uncorrected work to gauge your child’s understanding.

SPELLING

Yesterday you had a grid of all the common words to try to read and spell. There were 80 words on the list which you have all covered. How many can you read and spell? Make sure that the trickiest ones are the ones that you keep working on. I have attached  a blank wall. You could try to draw your own wall and write all your tricky words in the bricks using different colours and cool writing.

Next week we will be moving on to a new phoneme.

READING

Make sure you have completed all the bug questions in your new book. Your book will move to ‘My Library’ once you have read it.

If you have forgotten your login details, get in touch and we can help!

Each group has a similar task today. We have worked on retelling the story by drawing a picture and writing a sentence for the beginning, middle and end of the story. The first sentence has been done for you. Click on the links below for your tasks.

MATHS

Following on from our shape and colour patterns, we are looking at number patterns.

To get started, try some counting (use a number line if you need to)

  • counting up to 30- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…
  • counting down from 30- 30, 29, 28, 27,26…
  • counting up in 2s- 2, 4, 6, 8,10, 12…
  • counting down in 2s-20, 8, 16, 14, 12…
  • counting up in 10s-10, 20, 30, 40, 50…
  • counting down in 10s- 100, 90, 80, 70…

It might help to write out some of these patterns.

Click here for some help for this activity (the sound clips can take a minute to load up and play)

There are two activities to try. If the first one is easy, try the second!

I will be in school today getting your packs ready. Mrs Webb was in yesterday and has got lots of lovely resources gathered together for you. As soon as they are ready for collection, we’ll let you know!

Tomorrow, I will be working in the hub and Mrs Webb will be posting your lessons online.

Have a great day

Mrs D 🙂

Home Learning 11.01.21

We hope you have all had a good holiday and that you and your families are all staying safe and well.

We are so disappointed that we are not able to go back to school right now but Mrs Webb and I are going to work very hard to keep you all busy.

Our online learning is going to look a bit different this time. We will be posting activities the same as last time but we are planning to have live video calls and also pre recorded videos to explain new learning to you.

This week, Mrs Webb and I will be preparing packs of useful materials for you to use at home and will let you know when these are available to collect. We will also be in touch with details of our first live check-in.

We will be setting up learning journals for each child which will allow you to post work and communicate with us. Until this is ready, you can contact us by email.

Mrs Deans (Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday)  eajulie.deans@glow.sch.uk

Mrs Webb (Wednesday, Thursday & Friday) eacaroline.webb@glow.sch.uk

Here are your tasks for today:

SPELLING

This week we are going to do some revision of common words covered. Please make sure you can read and spell all of them. Make a note of the ones you are finding difficult and those are the ones you need to practise.

Stage 1 Active Literacy Word Wall

READING

I have set new books for each group in your Bug Club accounts. Don’t forget, once you have read a book, it will move to ‘My Library’.

Your task for reading today is to answer the bugs on each page. Click on the bug and it will open up a question window. This is a really good way to develop different reading comprehension skills.

All groups have fiction books which are books with made up stories.

Ladybirds-  Bug Boy: Spider Camp

Glow-Worms-  Eco Apes Save Water

Spiders- Cat is Sleeping

MATHS

We have done a small bit of work on repeating patterns when we worked on shape. This week we are looking at patterns in colour and shape and then will move onto number patterns.

This task can be drawn onto a piece of paper, you can mark it up on a screenshot or talk it through.

I can identify repeating patterns using simple colours and shapes

If you are able to access YouTube, there is a very good song and dance about patterns called ‘Banana Banana Meatball’. Try to create your own movement patterns.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

It’s very important right now that we look after ourselves and each other when life is feeling very different. Take some time to think about how you are feeling and what things you like to do that make you feel good. Draw a picture of yourself (don’t forget the detail) doing something that makes you happy and try and send me a message to let me know how you are.

CHECK-IN

Usually on our first day back after Christmas, everyone is excited to talk about what they got for Christmas or what they did in the holidays. I’m hoping that we are all able to get together in a live meeting this week and get a good catch up with each other! I can’t wait to hear everyone’s news!

Triangles

We have been working really hard with our multiplication calculations. We have been testing our friends through various games and this week we have been using calculators to check our answers. Do you have a calculator at home you could use to investigate some calculations of the 2, 5 or 10 times table?

Circles

This week we have been counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Can you recall either of these? Counting in 2’s to 20, 5’s to 50 and 10’s to 100?

Use your 100 square to help you.

Mrs Webb 🙂

READING

This week we are continuing our non- fiction reading. Each group has a new non- fiction book. We have been learning that non- fiction books contain facts and that we use them to find information. Look out for contents and index pages which make it easier to find the information we need.

Ladybirds- Rainbows

Glow-worms-Sport is Fun

Spiders-  Get Up and Go! – The book you are doing in class is not on Bug Club Online so I have allocated another one to read at home.

MATHS

This week we have started work on length. We are beginning with a focus on the language of measure- long, longer, longest, short, shorter, shortest, tall, taller, tallest. Compare, sort and order items from around the house according to length. For example, pieces of string or sticks found on a walk.
