First build a den! Build a den
Build a Den and Measure its Perimeter
CfE Es and Os MNU 2 – 11b
Build a den for yourself or a toy figure and measure the outside edges of the base of your den.
The perimeter of a 2D shape or object is the total measurement of all its sides added together. To measure the perimeter of a square you would have to measure the length of each side and add the measurements together. For more information on how to work out a perimeter
If you don’t have a measuring tape use a piece of string or rope, pace out the lengths or measure in foot lengths heel to toe.
What makes a good den? It’s all about the angles!
CfE Es and Os MNU 2 – 17a, 2-17b
Now that you have built your den take a look at the angles used.
What kind of slope does the roof have? What angles (obtuse, acute, straight, right or reflex) would help keep everyone in your den dry in a heavy rain storm? What angles have been used for any supporting parts (poles. chair legs…)
To remind you of what angles are and their names, visit
How do you think you would feel if you had to build a shelter to live (not to play)?
There are many people around the world who have to build shelters for themselves and their families using what they can find around them.
