Treasure map

Introduction

What do we think of when we think of pirates? Eye patches, treasure, parrots, maps. Today we are going to work in teams to make our own pirate treasure maps. We don’t have any paper but we do have a camera to photograph our maps. You can use the ground and anything you find lying on it plus the materials we have brought out to make giant maps.

What should each map include to make it a map? Agree on Success criteria. These may include a border, a key, a North arrow

Development

Pupils sent to work in groups after being reminded of the good qualities of a good team. Maps should show features of the landscape (mountains, towns, rivers…)Groups are given Black X (showing the location of the buried treasure) to add once they have completed the map. Photo taken of map both with and without X.

Groups write out a sequence of instructions (a list of a minimum of 4 steps minimum and a maximum of 6) to help fellow pirates find the treasure you have buried on the island.

Example

Starting at the beach walk forward until you come to the line of mountains.

Turn left at the mountains and go to the lake.

At the lake, turn right and go to the forest.

At the forest, go forwards to the road.

Carefully cross the road, turn right and keep going straight until you reach the river.

Stop at the river where you will see a large oak tree. Treasure is buried to the left of the tree.

A Outdoors

Write instructions and swap map (ie move to another groups map) and see if, following the instructions< you can put a red X where you think the treasure is buried.

Or

B Indoors Use photos as above – second group draw on a red X
