What do trees do for us?

Outdoor and Woodland Learning Scotland (OWL Scotland ) have created a list of  some of the jobs that trees do for us.  For older children this is a chance to find information, take notes and present the information in a new form.

Follow the link below to see the list of jobs.   Choose one thing from the list of reasons why we should plant trees.   Write down the job you have chosen and rewrite it in your own words – imagine that you had to explain the reason to someone younger than you.

Choose a second reason – this time, choose one that you are not familiar with or don’t quite understand.  Search online for more information about the topic you have chosen.  You may need to take notes as you collect this new information.  Again, rewrite the reason in your own words.  Imagine you are explaining it to someone older (but less well informed) than you.

Get to Know a Tree and Write a Poem

This task is for writers working at First Level.

It can be done by a small group  of people working together or by an individual working alone.  Your first task is to find a tree that you can spend some time with.  This might be in your own garden or near to your house.  It may be a tree that you pass on your daily walk or in a nearby park.

The aim of this activity is to write a poem describing what a tree looks , feels, sounds and even smells like.  The finished poem will be a description of how the tree appears to you from close up and from a distance.  It will describe the top of the tree and the very bottom, down to the roots.   Use two describing words (adjectives) in each line and two naming words (nouns).  For a more detailed explanation see Poem Template and Example.

Once written out, your poem could be illustrated with bark rubbings taken from the tree (OPAL Bark Art shows you how) or with your own drawings.

Make a List of the Jobs, Services and Products Provided by the Truffala Trees

This task is suitable for learners working at First and Second Level.

List the jobs, services and products provided by the Truffala Trees –don’t just think about what the Lorax tells us.  Use your new knowledge of trees and their benefits to humans and to biodiversity in general.

You can use  The Lorax – Truffala Trees List to record your ideas but any piece of paper will do.  Save the trees and reuse a piece of scrap paper before it goes into the recycling bin!

 Design Posters

This task is suitable for learners working at First and Second Level.

Good posters send a message in a simple and immediate way often using pictures with only a little bit of text.  The pictures and text should work together to tell the most important information you want your audience to understand.

Think like the Once-ler.  Design an eye-catching and attractive poster the Once-ler might use to tell other people about Thneeds and their many uses.

Design a Campaign Poster – Save the Pond for the Humming Fish!

What would the Humming Fish like to tell everyone about their pond?  What makes it special?  What would happen if there was no pond?   Make sure your poster is can be seen clearly from a distance (if it’s A4 size, from about 2 paces away).
