The Lorax – Introduction

Introduction to The Lorax by Dr Seuss

The  Lorax is a picture book with a very powerful message.  It can be read at very simple level or as a fable and  jumping off point for discussion about our rights and responsibilities for the world around us.  It can be read and enjoyed by children and young people working at Early, First and Second Level.

The Lorax – Mind Map

The Lorax was first published in 1971.  The themes it introduces are just as , if not more, relevant today.

It tells story of a Once-ler who discovers that Truffula trees can be used to make  ‘Thneeds ‘ (strange but versatile garments). The demand for Thneeds is enormous.  The Once-ler’s greed and disregard for nature mean that the Truffula trees become extinct and the natural environment destroyed.  The Lorax, ‘speaks for the trees’.

This reading of the book by Danny DeVito is a lovely introduction to the book.
