Snail Racing

Have you ever seen some snails racing?  It is a tense sport and sure to be included in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021!

In this video, Lorna has put together a crack team of snails who raise against the clock to travel 10cm.  Which one will finish first?

This fun activity can link to numeracy and mathematics concepts such as:

  • Estimation – How long will it take the snails? Which one will go fastest? Which one will be slowest?
  • Measure – Calculating the distance travelled – do they all travel the 10cm? Or, measuring a course for your own snail race!
  • Direction – Which direction are the snails travelling in?  Do they change at all during the race?  Could you draw a journey on the ground for snails to try to follow in the race?
  • Speed, distance and time – Can you work out how fast each snail was travelling?  How long would it take them to travel 20cm?

Watch the video below to be inspired and thrilled by this exciting sport!
