Sensory Jar Perfume

Nature is a wonderful thing to explore and can appeal to all our senses – touch, smell, sight, sounds and even taste!  Through this activity pupils will create a sensory jar which will be lovely to look at and smell.

Lesson Activity

  1. Collect natural materials either on a walk or from a collection brought in – leaves, pine cones, twigs, stones etc are all great. Support pupils to identify what they have put into their potion.
  2. Put the items in a container with a lid, add water and shake.
  3. Support pupils to smell the perfume – can they identify any smells? Do they like the smell?

Differentiation

Ask further questions to find out more – can pupils identify different smells? Can they identify the different smells?

Can pupils recall what they put into their potion?  Can they identify this using text/symbols/pictures?

Add some spices or food colouring to the container – what does this do to the smell/texture/colour?

Extension

Literacy – writing a recipe for sensory perfume, recalling ingredients

Numeracy – following a recipe and counting/measuring ingredients

HWB – putting sensory perfumes into a bottle or jar and using it to aid self-regulation
