Purple Pen

Purple pen is a great downloadable package that is free and relatively easy to use. Purple pen offers students and staff the chance to create orienteering courses that can then be downloaded, saved or printed.

We would recommend that this is a great technology lesson for using with upper primary stage pupils or secondary pupils. (TCH 2-01a, TCH 2-11a, TCH 3-01a, TCH 3-11a)

You will need a map to work off – many East Ayrshire schools can find a copy of their school on the weblink at the bottom of this page. But scanning a copy of the school grounds from the Janitor or the local authority planning department can work well too.

There are a range of YouTube videos that will be helpful:

A series produced by DFOK (Dartford Orienteering Klub) for schools; short (about 5mins) per video. Note the use of pictorial descriptions which can help some pupils – and can also be used for quizzes etc. to get the pupils to know & understand them.
Download takes approximately 6 minutes.
