Outdoor learning pedagogy presents opportunities to stimulate  writing through experiences and practical activities which engage learners with the real world.  These shared experiences are the basis for equity in learning and raising attainment.  Outdoor Learning Contexts for Writing – Four Writing Styles and 9 Text Types has suggestions and links to supporting resources for  Primary 1 to Primary 7.  The grid is based on the EA Active Literacy Team’s description of text styles and types and planning grid Four Writing Styles and Nine Text types – Coverage of Writing.

COACh have created a suite of IDL materials linked to books and novels  which have a strong environmental theme.  Each of the Literacy Out of the Box resources (Early, First and Second Levels) provide suggestions for activities for all 8 curricular areas.  Suggestions for learning activities can be used and adapted to meet the needs and interests of learners and the learning setting.

We have compiled a further list of books, suitable for working with learners working at Early to Second Level, which lend themselves to Outdoor Learning and Learning for Sustainability – Some of Our Favourite Books – ThingLink

For a collection of books, songs and rhymes which lend themselves to  Heading outdoors – Scottish Book Trust
