Food Growing Projects and LfS

Learning about where our food comes from and the importance of good food for health is an essential part of Curriculum for Excellence.  Growing, harvesting, cooking and eating food allows learners to engage in a range of activities across the curriculum and engage with Learning for Sustainability in the Real World.

Our Food for Thought Poster provides a simple summary of the ‘What, Who and How ‘ of a 2016 project undertaken by EAC LOST working with 7 EAC primary schools and in partnership with TCV in Scotland. A 2018-19 EAC LOST project focused on community involvement Generations Growing Together.

Funding for each of these projects came from the Food for Thought, Education Scotland.   Applications for 2023-24 are now closed but visit  Food for Thought Fund for updates on future funding.

Education Scotland – Grow, Cook, Eat suggests ways you can use similar projects to support learning across the curriculum and engage with partner organisations and with your local community.

Education Scotland has produced an exemplar showing how Using Food as a Context can support Education Scotland – Learning for Sustainability and the video from St Eunan’s Primary, Clydebank shows how keeping chickens was used as part of a food based context for learning.
