Create a character

CfE Es and Os    Writing  LIT 0-26a, 1 -26a

You are going to use found materials to make a character.  You may choose to put your character into a short story. Learners working at Early Level may want to use the Story Frame below.  Learners working at First Level can expand the story using the

Go for a walk and stop along the way to collect things. If you are outdoors things like leaves, sticks or stones. If you are indoors you could use string, cushions, pegs, pieces of Lego ….

Use lots of interesting vocabulary to describe the things you find – for example,  ‘these leaves are wet and slippery’, ‘this feels smooth’,  ‘that looks look jaggy’.

Development:

Using the materials that you have gathered you are going to create a character.  Lay the materials on the ground/floor to make a picture.

Next,  talk about the character.  ‘What is your character’s name?’ ‘Where does the character live?’

Conclusion:

Together,  discuss an adventure or problem your character could be be involved in.  Talk about each element of the story in turn.  This might be developed into a written or illustrated text.  At Early Level. you can draw pictures/and or write text using the  Story Frame – Opening, Setting, Event, Ending.   At First Level, you could use the 6 Part Story Board

Opening – Once upon a time …

Setting – ‘Where does the story take place?’ ‘What time of year is it in your story?’

A problem or event – Describe something that happens to the character (perhaps they get lost, organises a party, meets a friend …)

Story ending – Does the problem get solved? How does the character feel at the end of the story?
