Chief Seattle’s Speech

Chief Seattle was  a First Nations Native American leader who grew up in a world which would seem very familiar to Torak.  In 1854 Chief Seattle made a speech warning about the damage being done to nature. The speech  ended  with these words, “This we know: Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it.”  Can you put this into your own words?

Watch the film and listen to Chief Seattle’s speech.

You Tube – Chief Seattle’s Speech

This speech has inspired many people across the world to think about the impact our actions have on the world particularly the natural world.  Tell some one about Chief Seattle and share the video.   Have a conversation  about his message.  Use the following suggestions as prompts for discussion.

  • Do you think Chief Seattle’s speech is important or helpful to us in the 21st Century?  Give reasons for your answer.
  • Chief Seattle was worried that the way some people were choosing to live was damaging the natural world. Can you think of 3 things we could each do  to reduce the damage that we do to the natural world?
  • Are there other people we know of from the past or the present who tried or are trying to send a message similar to Chief Seattle’s?

Can you list 3 things you could do to live more sustainably?

For example – always recycle your litter, buy things with less packaging (can you write a letter/email/message the manufacturers of your favourite snacks to find out what they are doing to reduce the amount of litter sent to landfill?)
