Forces

Below are a number of links from the Scouts UK site which has a lot of activities on it. These 3 are all forces based. Each could be adapted and taken a bit further if required.

  1. Teeny Tiny Twig Rafts https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/teeny-tiny-twig-rafts/  Once the rafts are built you could have a competition to see which one will carry the biggest load. If you can find a larger piece of water (a bath or a pond) try having races.
  2. Lolly Stick Catapults https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/lolly-stick-catapults/. Try investigating how the design, or the distance the top stick is bent back, affects how far the pompom flies.
  3. A Flair for Hot Air https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/a-flair-for-hot-air/. How high can you fly? (Please note that the science explaining why hot air balloons float is WRONG. The air particles do not get lighter!! The correct explanation is – As the air inside the balloon gets warmer it expands so it becomes less dense and therefore floats in the surrounding colder air. The particles have the same weight and size.)
