Royal Regiment of Scotland Open Day

The Royal Regiment of Scotland will be running a one day open day Thurs 16 July 15 at Dreghorn Barracks, Edinburgh, for Training Providers working with young people Not in Education or Training.  My team, 1 SCOTS, alongside our Reserve battalion, 6 SCOTS, have been successfully running a five day package with a range of youth groups and training providers including, Ingeus, West Lothian Youth Action Project, Tomorrows People and Street League across the Lothian and the Borders.  During each session there is an element of military training to provide an insight into the Army but they also teach core employable skills such as; team work, communications skills, problem solving, taking responsibility, health and well-being and developing leadership qualities.  The courses are open to all young people from 16 – 35 who are keen to participate in something a little different and has been very well received to date.

Our open day hopes to showcase this exiting opportunity that we can provide to the young people you work with.  Below are come photos of a similar course we ran for the Edinburgh College Sport Department along with an outline of the Open Day.  Dreghorn Barracks (DHB) is located just off the Edinburgh bypass post code EH13 9QW.

Tom Hunter Challenge 2015

Kilmarnock Academy equalled their best performance in the Tom Hunter Challenge this year. Our team of Scott Mains, Jack Mains and Craig Denim achieved joint 2nd in the recent Tom Hunter Challenge with their product Doggy Doo – an electronic dog bag dispenser designed to cut down to dog waste in public areas. Their reward was a prize of £1,500 and some excellent feedback from the judges on their presentation.

The winning idea was from an S6 group at St Josephs was for a UV band which measures exposure to the sun in order to reduce levels of skin cancer in the long run. Despite being up against older opposition and some young enterprise projects, the team remained calm and done the school proud!

Head Teacher Appointment

Following reports in the Kilmarnock Standard, I should like to confirm that I have been appointed to the post of head teacher at Trinity Academy as from August . My understanding is that my post will be filled in an acting capacity until a head teacher is appointed for the new merged school. This was discussed fully at last night’s parent Council meeting.

It goes without saying (though I’ll say it anyway!) that Kilmarnock Academy is something special. I have never worked with such dedicated staff; both teachers and non- teachers, and such fantastic parents and young people, and I  will certainly look back on my time here with huge fondness.

Many thanks for all your support and kind words.
