MODERN LANGUAGES NEWS!

N5 French pupils will be participating in a project called Language Linking, Global Thinking and on Monday 5th June the class gave their partner student Oisin Pircher a very warm welcome. Oisin is currently studying International Business and Modern Languages at Strathclyde University . He will be spending his 3rd year at university in Grenoble. After telling the class a bit about himself the pupils got the chance to ask him questions and generally get to know him . Oisin will regularly communicate with the class during the course of the year to illustrate how enriching it is to spend a year abroad using a language other than English. It is hoped that the two-way correspondence between student and class will bring French culture and language alive for our pupils and show them the real relevance of learning a language.

Well done to S3 pupils Callan Duncan, Lauren Thorburn, Paige Nelson and Laura Johnstone who assisted Mrs Smith in a transition lesson at Bellfield Primary . They gave a presentation to pupils about how much they enjoy French and also answered some questions from the Primary 7 pupils. Mrs Smith taught the class school subjects in French and our S3 pupils gave out stickers and prizes, helped with fun French games , interacted with pupils and led some of the learning. They worked well together as a team. Bravo!

Schools Will Rock You

Tickets are now available for the Kilmarnock Academy’s Production of “Schools Will Rock You”. Tickets are available online from the link below.

Book now

We Will Rock You is a musical based on the songs of British rock band Queen with a book by Ben Elton. The musical tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion, and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same. Musical instruments and composers are forbidden, and rock music is all but unknown.
Students and staff have worked very hard on this great production, come along to support our performers on Wednesday 21st June – Friday 23rd June at 7pm in the Assembly Hall.

Rapid Response Engineering Challenge

All new S2 pupils will participate in our annual Rapid Response Engineering Challenge to be held on Wednesday 31st May.  Pupils have been introduced to a scenario where they are the engineers in charge of helping their community to clean up and rebuild after a hurricane.

Last week, Mr Wallace, Miss McLeish and our guest Civil Engineer, Steven Scott from CH2M Hill in Glasgow, delivered the initial presentation to all new S2 pupils.  Pupils will now be preparing in classes across the school for our Activity Day which will focus on providing water, shelter, food, transportation and communication after a devastating hurricane.  For more information on Civil Engineering, please visit the educational resources from the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Pupils will work in both indoor and outdoor practical challenges in teams during the Activity Day.  They should come in casual clothing, and prepare to get wet!  We will also be collecting £1 per person for WaterAid,  an international charity that transforms lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation.  More information on our chosen charity can be found here.

ERASMUS VISIT TO PORTUGAL

Four students – Rowan Taylor , Callan Duncan, Natalia Polonowska and Ruby Whitaker – along with two members of staff – Ms E Walker and Ms M Fullerton – took part in a visit to EPA Carvalhais a fantastic school in North East Portugal as part of our Erasmus + project, ‘Sharing European values using Film and Cinema’.

EPA Carvalhais is a very unusual school. Not only does it teach young people the usual school subjects like Maths, Languages, Science and so on but also teaches young people agricultural skills and animal husbandry. Students at EPA can learn to be vintners, cheese makers or olive oil producers. The school rears their own sheep and goats, keeps horses as well as making their own cheese, olive oil and wine all of which they sell in a school shop to the local community.

Our group were lucky enough to have time to spend exploring Porto for a couple of days before travelling on to the school to meet up with our Erasmus partners. We visited FC Porto football ground and museum, climbed the 240 steps to the top of the Clerigos Tower, wandered along the banks of the Douro River and crossed the iconic Dom Luis Bridge.

We had a fabulous week once we met up with our Erasmus partners from Portugal, Italy, Turkey and Lithuania at the Portuguese school. There was time in the programme to share the work we had been doing at home making the video looking at the social and economic background of our students and the community they live in. Our students had worked with their classmates to research, find data and produce graphs to display the information which they incorporated into their video along with an interview with our head teacher, Mr D Rose.

Our students were involved in Portuguese lessons, sports, dancing and tasting traditional food like ‘Francesinha’. They tried horse riding, cheese making and learnt all about olive oil production.

There was also the opportunity for sightseeing. We visited the beautiful communitarian village, Rio de Onor on the border with Spain, experienced a boat tour along the Douro River to see the wonderful terraced vineyards and visited Braganca Castle and museum.

We also had the great honour of meeting the Mayor of Mirandella, Mr Antonio Branco during our tour of the town. At the Town Hall we were granted permission to take in the view from the mayor’s balcony.

We had a great time in Mirandella, made good friends with our Erasmus partners and are now looking forward to our next opportunity to meet up and share our work in Lithuania in October.

Muito obrigado EPA Carvalhais para sua maravilhosa hospitalidade
