Term 2 Overview of Learning
Literacy & Language
In Term 2, we will be using the Active Literacy spelling strategies and activities to develop our spelling knowledge and explore phonemes
We will be reading a non-fiction text ‘How, what, why of Mammals’ to explore the following reading strategies to help us when reading as a group and independently: main ideas, summarizing, question types and using the features of an information text to find information.
We will be writing non-fiction texts including non- chronological reports and instructions.
French
In French our topics will be:
- Halloween
- Colours
- Christmas
Numeracy & Mathematics
This term we will be continuing with our Number Talks, following the strategy of the week, to develop our mental numeracy skills.
We will be focusing on the following concepts:
- Place value looking beyond the decimal point
- Working with negative numbers including number lines
- Mixed word problems using addition and subraction
- Money- linked to calculations using the 4 operations
Health & Wellbeing
We are going to be taking part in online training sessions run by East Ayrshire where P6 will be training to be well-being champions. This will link with developing skills to be playground buddies and the roles and responsibilities needed.
We will also be continuing with the RSHP aspect of our health and wellbeing planners we will be looking at:
- Changes our bodies go through during puberty
- Emotional and mental changes during puberty
- Building relationships
In PE we are focusing on target games and developing striking and hitting skills through sports including tennis and badminton.
Social Subjects and Interdisciplinary Learning
Our topic for our second term is ‘The Victorians’. We will be learning about:
- Why it is called The Victorian era
- Queen Victoria and her role
- The lifestyle of a workhouse child
- Victorian inventions
- Victorian Christmas traditions
Our Expressive Arts and ICT will link to our Victorian topic. In ICT we will use Victorian toys as a stimulus, using a design brief to create and evaluate our own toys. We will also be exploring graphics tools using the Paint programme.
