Term 4 2023/2024

Literacy

Reading

This term we will be reading ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl. This will run alongside our mini topic on Chocolate.

We will continue to work on developing our comprehension using the 6 comprehension strategies and  we will continue to further develop our answers to literal, inferential and evaluative questions.

Pupils will also work independently using ‘Reading Eggs’ this term where they will work on texts that are aimed at their individual levels. Pupils will develop their knowledge of phonics, spelling vocabulary while showing understanding of the texts.

Pupils will also be encouraged to read for enjoyment, participating in daily ERIC (Everyone Reading In Class) time and completing follow-up book reviews to practise their response writing.

Writing

This term we will be working on  persuasive and discursive writing.  Pupils will revisit previous learning about persuasive techniques before having the chance to put these into practice in their writing where they will try to persuade their reader. We will also have a go at creating our own chocolate adverts and jingles.

Later they will balance arguments looking at pros and cons.

Spelling

We will continue to explore Active Spelling strategies using Stage 4/5 of the Active Literacy Scheme.

Numeracy & Maths

This term we will be exploring:

  • Time
  • 3d Shape
  • Multiples and Factors
  • Number Patterns
  • Function Machines

We will continue to develop our mental arithmetic by taking part in daily ‘Number Talk’ sessions. This session we will revisit all strategies where pupils can have a go at using the strategies that work for them.

Health and Wellbeing

We will finish our learning on Neurodiversity  before moving onto  healthy eating and internet safety.

Physical Education

In PE, we will be focusing on fielding games – rounders, cricket  and even some golf.

IDL

We will explore chocolate this term alongside our novel ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Some key areas we will look at are:

  • Where chocolate comes from
  • How chocolate is made
  • Fairtrade
  • Chocolate science investigation – melting points
  • Designing our own chocolate bars
  • Shoe box chocolate rooms

ICT

We are going to use code.org this term to work on our coding skills. We will also have a go at using spreadsheets to display data on graphs and charts during our maths information handling lessons.

Expressive Arts

We will participate in drama, art and singing this term linked to our topic of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.

Science

We will investigate that the role some of our major organs play in our bodies. We will focus on:

  • heart
  • lungs
  • digestive organs
  • brain

We will use a variety of practical activities and experiments to explore these to make learning hands on.

Outdoor Learning

We will be going to Dean Castle Park in May for two sessions of outdoor learning where we will do:

  • den building
  • pond dipping
  • scavenger hunts
  • orienteeirng
