Literacy

Reading

This term we will be exploring non-fiction texts.

We will use ‘Explorers Then and Now’ from Oxford Owl  in order to revisit the features of non-fiction texts and to model how to use the 6 comprehension strategies when working with non-fiction texts.

We will then move onto ‘Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System’ as our class text. This ties in with our topic this term which is Space.  We will continue to work on developing our answers to literal, inferential and evaluative questions.

Pupils will also be encouraged to read for enjoyment, participating in daily ERIC (Everyone Reading In Class) time.

Writing

This term we will be  be having a go at writing some of our own poetry. We will explore poetic devices during grammar and transfer these skills into our writing.

Spelling

We will continue to explore Active Spelling strategies using Stage 4/5 of the Active Literacy Scheme.

Numeracy & Maths

This term we will be exploring:

  • Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
  • Measure
  • Time
  • Money

We will also continue to develop our mental arithmetic by taking part in daily ‘Number Talk’ sessions with a focus on multiplication strategies.

Health and Wellbeing

Our focus this term in HWB will be substance misuse. We will explore:

  • smoking
  • consequences of risk taking behaviour
  • how to deal with emergencies

We will also explore neurodiversity through a series of lessons. This will help our learners understands that all brains are different and that’s what makes us unique.

Physical Education

In PE, we will be improving our possession games skills. We will work on these by participating in sessions of:

  • Basketball
  • Netball
  • Football

IDL

We will explore space this term. Some key areas we will look at are:

  • Solar System – planets and sun
  • Stars and Constellations
  • Moon phases
  • Space exploration
  • Moon landings
  • STEM – Mars Rover

Pupils will also participate in individual and group research projects, encouraging them to lead their own learning and to build on cooperative learning skills.

ICT

 

We are going to enhance our word processing skills by using Dance Mat Typing and then we will look at how to create a presentation using PowerPoint.
