Literacy

Reading

This term we will be reading ‘There’s a Viking in my Bed’ by Jeremy Strong. This will run alongside our topic on the Vikings.

We will be developing our comprehension skills using the 6 comprehension strategies and we will begin developing our answers to literal and inferential questions.

Pupils will be encouraged to read for enjoyment, participating in daily ERIC (Everyone Reading In Class) time.

Writing

This term we will be exploring descriptive writing. Pupils will look at writing character and setting descriptions before having a go at incorporating these into their own imaginative stories.

Spelling

We will continue to explore Active Spelling strategies using Stage 4/5 of the Active Literacy Scheme.

Numeracy & Maths

This term we will be exploring:

  • Place value – up to 5 digits
  • Rounding and estimation
  • Negative numbers
  • Order of operations
  • Factors and multiples
  • We will also continue to develop our mental arithmetic by taking part in daily ‘Number Talk’ sessions.

Health and Wellbeing

Our focus this term in HWB will be emotional literacy and friendships/ relationships. We will also create a Class Charter while looking at the UNRC.

Physical Education

In PE, we will be developing our skills in running, jumping and throwing during our athletics  lessons. We will also work on improving our stamina during fitness sessions.

IDL – The Vikings

We will explore Vikings this term. Some key areas we will look at are:

  • Where did the Vikings come from?
  • Where and why did they invade?
  • Longships
  • Life as a Viking – food, clothes, trade
  • Viking warriors and weapons
  • Were the Vikings raiders or settlers?
  • Viking Gods and Goddesses
  • Myths and legends

Pupils will also participate in individual and group research projects, encouraging them to lead their own learning and to build on cooperative learning skills.
