Primary 2 Friday 31st March

In literacy this week we have been revising many of the phonemes and the children are progressing really well and now using their knowledge of sounds to decipher words and begin to spell some simple words with growing independence.

In maths, this week we have been subtracting  from 20 game using Numicon and number lines. The children are still having fun applying their problem-solving skills using the theme Goldilocks and the three bears exploring measure and volume.

As this is Food Fortnight for health and wellbeing, we will have been exploring the children’s understanding of healthy eating. Last week we explored where bananas come from and the type of climate, they need to grow so by contrast this week we have been looking at growing carrots and what dishes we could make using carrots. Big Cook Little Cook showed us how to make a carrot cake so you might get some requests to bake next week.

Thanks again for supporting your children with their homework tasks and preparing a short talk about their favourite toy. The children were very proud of their toys and good at explaining where they got it and keep it. Who is allowed to play with it and the class were very good at asking questions about their friend’s toys?

Have a lovely Easter holiday and happy egg hunting and enjoy some chocolate treats.

P6: week beginning 27th March 2023

We’ve made it to the last week of Term 3. It’s been a very busy time and everyone’s looking forward to a well deserved break.

Here’s what P6 have been focusing on this week.

In Literacy, for our spelling we were focusing on words linked with the Easter story. We used talking and listening skills to learn more about Easter practices and traditions. Our reading into writing this week was predicting the next part of our class novel and writing in the style of the author. We practised our handwriting skills with recipes and an Easter poem.

For Numeracy we continued to use problem solving strategies. We acted out the situation and used practical resources to get to the solutions. We also brushed up on our multiplication tables and played lots of interactive games.

On Wednesday we had our final skiing and tubing session. It was a chance for some of our parents and carers to come along and see the progress we’ve made. We all had a great time.

As part of Food and Fair-trade Fortnight, we planted cucumber seeds and learned all about herbs and spices. We researched where they are grown and how they can be used in cooking. Yesterday we made Tzatziki dip using cucumber, mint, Greek yogurt and lemon juice. Most of the class liked the taste and texture. We learned how to use the claw grip when using a knife to safely chop fruit and vegetables.

Today we enjoyed watching the P6 and P5’s performance of The Lion King. Later we took part in an Easter quiz in teams of four. It was great fun.

Have a great holiday and look forward to seeing you all at the start of Term 4.

Happy Easter.

P7 – 30th March 2023 – Weekly Round-up

Wow! What a busy, hard working and fun week we have had and now we are all ready for a well deserved holiday…only one day to go!

Here’s a summary of our week.

On Monday we worked with partners during numeracy time, giving peer support and consolidating our ability to calculate a fraction of a quantity.  Feedback was positive with the majority of pupils saying that working with a buddy was helpful to them.  Everyone worked hard during Literacy to write a set of instructions; the focus was on writing a recipe for spring rolls after having made them last week.  Then in the afternoon, we focused on Food Fortnight and the journey of rice from farm to fork.  This was really interesting to learn about and the class demonstrated their learning by creating a comic strip to show the different stages of rice production.

Tuesday was a reward day in P7 as everyone had been saving up their class currency for the last few weeks to reach a target of £3000 and after plenty of team work they reached their goal.  We spent the morning making chocolate and marshmallow Easter cakes and designing and making Easter cards.

After break time, we had a visit from Stacey who works for Love My Bus and she told us all about the benefits of using buses to get around.  She was lots of fun and had us playing some games and even dancing around the hall!

Later on in the day, we watched the film Wall-E, which has a great message about the need to care for our environment, and enjoyed eating our crispy cakes – yum!

On Wednesday, we rounded off our work on fractions by completing an end of topic assessment- this was quite challenging as we had to work independently but everyone tried their best.  We had WOW in the afternoon and managed to get outside to be active for a while.

Today, it was lovely to head to the church for the school’s Easter Service; it is always so nice when we can do things together.  We also had an end of topic quiz to complete based on our topic of China, we completed this through Teams online.  Miss Gibson treated the class to an Easter craft this afternoon to round the day off.

Here are some of the wonderful homework creations, from last week, showing tourist attractions in China, everyone was so imaginative and went to a great effort!

Wishing you all a fabulous Easter holiday and looking forward to seeing everyone back to enjoy the final term of primary school!

P4F w/b 20.3.23

Happy Friday! We’re nearly at the end of term, it’s flown by!

We’ve had another busy week in P4F, here’s a peek at our week:

In Literacy, we have been continuing our work on our class novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and building upon our comprehension strategy skills. We used a variety of skills to complete some easter literacy challenges with Mrs Ferguson including rearranging word patterns and putting words into alphabetical order.

For Numeracy, we have continued to explore the concept of division and using different strategies to help us (number lines were popular!). We are looking at how to solve word problems and strengthening our knowledge of fact families which should help us with our assessment next week. We have also been looking at time and are becoming more confident in telling the time.

For RME we have been looking at the story of Easter and yesterday decorated some boiled eggs that represent the stones being rolled away from the opening of the tomb. Pupils had great fun and were creative with their designs!

In IDL, the class looked at the journey of chocolate and how far the cocoa beans have to travel before they are made into the chocolate bars we know and love. The class were then able to create a poster demonstrating what they had learned. We hope to finish them today. We also put our art skills to the test and created some colourful mugs filled with hot chocolate using chalk pastels. YUM!

Have a lovely weekend

Primary 2 Friday 24th March

In literacy this week we have been learning about the diagraph qu and using construction and role play to build The Snow Queen a palace, enjoyed cosy quilts and made a maze to hide Snow White and the dwarfs from the Wicked Queen.  The children are gaining more confidence at making simple sentences and breaking and blending more complex words in their reading books.  At the moment we are still experiencing difficulty gaining  online access to the reading books from this scheme. Thanks for your support with reading and helping your child to gain confidence and fluency. The tricky words to revise this week are they, was we, you

In maths, this week we have played a fun subtraction from 20 game using  2 ten frames and counters. The children have now investigated and explored using  Numicon to make take away calculations, coat hangers and pegs and rods.  The children have had great fun applying their problem solving skills using the theme Goldilocks and the three bears exploring measure and volume.

As this is Food Fortnight for health and wellbeing we will have being exploring the children’s understanding of healthy eating. This has led us to examine where bananas come from and carrots. We have also looked at Fair trade and farming bananas.

Thanks again for supporting your children with their homework tasks and next week I’m asking the children to prepare a short talk about their favourite toy. Explaining where they keep it, why it is special, maybe who gave it to them, where they keep it and who they like to share it with?

Buzz Group children  – toy talks on Tuesday 28th

Woody Group children – Wednesday 29th

Jessie Group Children – Thursday 30th

Wishing you a lovely relaxing week ahead.
