P6: Week beginning 22nd May 2023

Here’s a quick round up of what P6 has been learning this week.

Monday: In Literacy we focused on writing in paragraphs using the TiPToP strategy. In spelling we looked at words with ie and ei. It was quite tricky but we used a wee rhyme to help us remember which spelling to use. For topic we learned what happens during a solar and lunar eclipse then we moved onto how space has been explored.

Tuesday: We continued to explore number patterns and sequences and the focus was square and triangular numbers. For literacy we used an online reading scheme called Giglets to develop our independent reading and thinking skills. Later we worked with a learning partner to complete a timeline on space travel and exploration.

Wednesday:  For maths with Miss Gibson we took our learning outdoors to find and draw shapes with different perimeters.  Then we made posters for our food topic in Health & Wellbeing. In the afternoon we focused on French and we learned how to talk about the hobbies we enjoyed. After that we had our Wednesday WOW session.

Thursday: Today we will be continuing our persuasive writing , number patterns and after that we will be doing an exciting STEM activity with Mrs Ferguson.

Have a super long weekend and see you back on Wednesday!

P4S W.C. 22.5.23

Happy Wednesday Everyone,

We have a short week this week but have been filling it with lots of activities.

In Numeracy, we have been revising and practising Subtraction Strategies, including Subtraction with Exchange and 2 or 3 Step-Word Calculations.  Both of which are tricky but we have worked hard with each to improve our skills.

During our Outdoor Learning lesson with P4F this week, we were archaeologists digging for treasure.  When we found an artefact we were asked to describe what it looked like, what it was made from and what we thought it might be used for.  All very interesting and a bit messy too because there was a lot of sand.

Sadly, tomorrow, Mrs Connelly will be leaving us and we will all miss her so much.  We wish her all the best on the next stage of her amazing adventure.

May I wish you all a wonderful, long weekend,

From, Miss Steedman

P5 Week Beginning 15th May 2023

Good morning! We’ve had such a busy month of May so far and have enjoyed lots of different activities! We’ve enjoyed the bank holidays and Coronation Celebrations and have lots still to look forward to. Here is a quick update from P5:

In literacy, we have been continuing our novel “The Last Wolf” and also explored a text about William Wallace. The pupils had to independently read this text and answer a variety of questions to show their understanding. From there, pupils were then asked to create their own questions based on what they read.

For writing this week, we partnered up with P4F and participated in some creative writing. We had to work collaboratively with a P4 partner to produce a creative story of our choice. P5 had to support their partners with spelling and how to organise their stories into paragraphs. I was really impressed and proud of how the P5 supported the younger pupils and the stories that were produced were fab!

In maths, we have finished our block all about angles and completed an angles assessment. Most pupils can identify types of angles and missing angles. The trickiest part was using a protractor to draw and measure angles. We have now started a block on division and have been focusing on using the “equal groups” strategy with the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Ask the pupils to demonstrate this at home!

In other areas, we have been enjoying our Scottish Wars of Independence topic and have been given a homework challenge which will be due Monday 5th June. This has been discussed in class and pupils have some brilliant ideas, I can’t wait to see them! This week we learned about William Wallace and his significance in the Wars of Independence, including his victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. In groups, the pupils took on a STEM challenge to build a replica Stirling Bridge which had to stand on its own and be strong enough to hold a figure.

Next week is parents night and I’m looking forward to chatting with you all! Hope you have a lovely weekend!

P4P – Week Beginning 15th May 2023

Primary 4 have enjoyed a busy and creative week. Here’s a peek into what we have been up to:

In Literacy, our new phoneme this week was ‘ea’ as in break and we have enjoyed using active spelling strategies to help us practice our spelling words. For our writing we paired up with P5 to create our own stories. We looked at focusing more on writing in paragraphs (beginning, middle and end), different types of ending and increasing the number of adjectives we use. Feedback was really positive and everyone enjoyed working together. Thank you P5!

For Numeracy, our focus has been on fractions. Pupils have previously used the prior knowledge and have been working on finding halves and quarters of amounts. We really enjoyed the Wheel of Fortune game and Lego building fractions to help us consolidate our learning. This week we have been looking at tenths. We are able to identify tenths and are developing our ability to represent tenths in a variety of ways including in pictures and on number lines. Our next step is focusing on finding tenths of numbers and have quickly realised our times table knowledge is really useful!

Our Egyptians topics is well underway and we have been researching famous pharaohs and creating fact files about their lives as well as finishing of our activities from previous weeks. Our outdoor learning was linked to our topic and pupils had great fun exploring building the pyramids. The groups worked well using their critical skills to build pyramids out of wooden blocks, pasta and marshmallows and even a HUMAN PYRAMID!!

Have a great weekend

P4S w.c. 15.05.23

Good Morning Everyone,

In P4S this week we have been very busy enjoying outdoor activities involving our Ancient Egypt topic.  We worked in groups to build pyramids using humans; spaghetti and marshmallows; and large blocks.

During our IDL work this week we have been learning about Hieroglyphics from the Rosetta Stone and have created our very own Cartouche decorated with Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics.  They are very colourful and look brilliant on our wall.

In Numeracy this week we have been revising our Subtraction Strategies using concrete items and money to build upon our knowledge.  It’s been a challenge but we are all working hard to keep learning this skill.

In Literacy, we wrote a procedural essay about how we Mummified a Tomato, which was an experiment which we carried out last week.  It was interesting to see what we could remember about the experiment and also how we use different sentence openers.

During our P.E. lesson, we practised for Sports Day using the sacks for our P4 Sack Race.  It was something new to many of us and we all had a lot of fun. Roll on Sports Day!

Have a wonderful weekend Everyone,

Best wishes,

Mrs Connelly and Miss Steedman
