P5/4 and P4 Multiplication

P4 and P5/4 have been using arrays, numberline and their doubles knowledge to help work out their 2,4 and 8 times-tables. We also used a new resource called Numicon to help us look for factors.  Well done! Mrs Millar was very pleased.

Reasons for Seasons

This week we have been finding out how we get the different seasons.  We carried out some investigations using a globe and a lamp to explore the tilt of the Earth as it orbits the sun.

During our Number Talks sessions we have been using doubling and halving to multiply and using negative numbers to subtract.

Well done to our Euro Quiz team, Tyler Sheville, Julia Kretowicz, Neve Houston and Ben McCann, who represented us very well in the area competition.

Congratulations also to the K’Nex team  Kyla Crawford, Finlay Hamilton, Connor Wood and Bethany Evans who took part in the K’Nex competition at Newmilns Primary on Wednesday.

P7 Mandarin at Hurlford Primary

We are having the best experience with Mandarin teacher Mr Du from the East Ayrshire Chinese Team.  He is based at Loudoun Academy and visits us on a Thursday afternoon.

We were learning about table manners and dining etiquette in China last week and compared it to our dining etiquette in the UK.  We learned that their tables are almost always circular and they have a rotating circular centre that they sit all the food on.  They always order extra food and they share the food unlike in the UK when we order a singular portion.  He also taught us that they always expect to have too much food and it is better to have food left on the plates than finish every thing.

We were learning greetings this week in class and we have this video to show you our song.

Red Nose Day!

Today we have been taking part in Red Nose Day. We had onsies, Dressing gowns, Pyjamas, Slippers-and a zoo of soft toys. We played spot the difference, bingo and designed our own characters noses, we’ve had a great time and also helped to raise money for comic relief.

Food Fortnight Games

We played a game about Healthy Eating.

About the game:

You need 4 players or more to play the game. You start on the board and the first player rolls the dice then you land on a colour, the colour you land on is the colour of category. For that category you get a question. If you get the question right then you can put the colour of the category onto a plate. Once you get around the board and collect all the colours then you win the game.

The game taught us about the different food categories and what’s in them.  It taught us how to separate the foods into the different groupings.  It also showed us how much of each food type we should be eating in a plateful.

We are now more aware of our portion sizes.

We enjoyed Outdoor Learning this week for our French lesson.  We used the terms j’aime, j’adore, je n’aime pas and je deteste to express our opinions.

For our Space topic we used Oreo cookies to show the different phases of the moon.
