Buddy Up

On Thursday,  Speech and Language came into our class to deliver Buddy training to all P6s.   We learned how to  to communicate with wee ones by using  the OWL technique (observe, wait, listen) and the type of words and phrases we should use.  We enjoyed playing the warm up games and learning new skills.

As part of our Europe topic, we have been using Microsoft Publisher to create a tourist information leaflet on a European city, landmark or tourist attraction.  We learned how to access and retrieve information and how to create and modify text and images.

P7’s Active Day Out

We had a very busy day out: swimming at Loudoun Academy, lunch in Galston and a countryside walk back to Hurlford along the Chris Hoy cycle path.

We all loved using flippers in the swimming pool!  They made us swim faster and felt funny to walk in.  Some of us ventured up to the deep end for the first time.  It was also fun diving in and trying the reach the bottom of the pool.

After swimming we walked to Aroma Coffee Shop in Galston and had a delicious lunch.  The wrap pizzas were a big hit!  Everything looked and tasted great; we loved watching the food being prepared. We were even shown how to operate the till and allowed to type in the orders.  Thank you to Aroma Coffee Shop for showing us some super work place skills.

After lunch, we headed over to Candy Coated Café for a wee ice-cream treat.  There were so many flavours to choose from: irn bru, strawberry cheesecake, bubblegum, chocolate…   We all enjoyed the flavours we chose!

Fueled up, we headed for the cycle path and made our way back to Hurlford.  With the sun out, it was a lovely walk and we had fun spotting all the different nature that was around; we saw butterflies, ladybirds, birds, cows and lots of different plants.  We all did really well on the walk as it was quite a long way!

Danger Detectives

On Thursday 16th May, P6 went to New Farm Community Centre to take part in Danger Detectives.  It started off with a presentation from the Fire Service about fire safety in the home. Then an officer from Police Scotland showed us a clip about internet safety.

Next we were split up into groups and taken round the different workshops and scenarios.  These included Hazard House, Road Safety and Scottish Outdoor Access Code.  Our job was to find and identify the dangers and hazards and how to prevent accidents.  We enjoyed the hands-on activities and answering all the questions.

Today, as a follow up, we made posters to share our learning with the rest of the school.

P1 Dental Visitor

We had a special visitor in the classroom on Thursday who told us about teeth and how to keep them clean. We got to dress up as dentists and pretend to clean teeth using the giant tools and puppet. It was so much fun!

p2 French Animals

Primary 2 have been learning some names for jungle animals in French. They enjoyed playing pairs and battleships this week to help them remember the animal names. Do you know how to say lion, elephant or monkey in French? Ask your child if they can remember it, they are getting very good! Well done p2!

P4 Egyptian STEM Challenge

We have been learning about the Ancient Egyptians and have been learning about the importance of the River Nile. We learned that the Egyptians used something called a shaduf to lift water from the Nile to water their crops. In teams we used material available in our classroom to problem solve and build our own working shaduf.

10th May 2019

P6 have been very busy over the past two weeks.  We were invited to be Taste Testers for East Ayrshire school meals chefs.  We were the first to try out new recipes and dishes which might be included in our school lunch menus. The crispy salmon bites went down a treat!

We have also started our new topic on Europe.  So far we have been using maps and atlases to locate and identify the different countries that make up the continent.  We also made European flags for our display.  Today, Julia led the learning and invited the class to choose a European tourist attraction and produce a line drawing of it.  We hope to finish our drawings next week.

Our week

Multiplication

This week we learned about multiplication. We found out that the symbol is an x and it means ‘lots of’. We used arrays and  repeated addition to find the answers to our calculations.

We looked at multiplying by 2 and discovered it was just the same as doubles, We also investigated multiplying by 5 and 10.

Vikings

As part of our Viking topic we have been learning a lot about Viking houses. We know what materials they used to build them and what they looked like inside – they were very different to our houses! We worked in pairs to design the inside and outside and made our own Viking houses.

We also learned about Viking gods like Thor, Loki, Odin and more!
