P2B – Week beginning 7th December

Hello P2B,

I hope you are all getting excited for Christmas! We have been working very hard and I hope we keep this up until the holidays start. We looking at the last part of our Food and Farm topic this week and going to start some Christmas crafts and activities. Thank you to everyone that brought in the farms. They all look AMAZING! It’s clear you all worked hard and should give yourself a big pat on the back! To look at all your extremely impressive farms please click on the PowerPoint below.

In the lead up to Christmas I thought it would be nice to have a cooking challenge. Last week the class got the cress that they grew home. We talked about some ideas for the cress. Maybe you could make something using the cress. Our thinking task last week, set by the Fairtrade committee was to look at the ingredients and flavours used in gingerbread treats. The class designed a gingerbread man and were given the extra challenge of making gingerbread men and women at home using fairtrade products.

Education city – I have added homework this week called “week beginning 7.12.2020” The activity is a playlive game. This can be played against others in the school or anyone. You answer the questions as best you can in 60 seconds. Remember we are still practising our subtraction so do not worry about the time and try your best! I’ll keep this live so that you can use it as much as you want!

Spelling – we have been looking at the “oy” phoneme this week. Practice your phoneme words and your common words at home. Use the grid below for ideas.

Red – enjoy  royal  annoy  toys  loyal

said  big  could

Green – joy  boy  toys  enjoy

said  big  could  have

Blue – lip  log  let  leg

the  I  in  it

Have a fantastic week! Feel free to practice our Christmas Party songs at home – Cha cha slide, superman and Hokey Cokey we have practiced so far 🙂

Primary 3 week beginning 7th December

It’s beginning to look, and feel, like Christmas 🙂 and we have a busy week coming up this week.

Christmas lunch is on Tuesday and we have our party on Wednesday afternoon. It’s an exciting week!

Last week we learned about Saint Andrew and why he is Scotland’s patron saint. We also finished off our kilt leg pictures and had a look at some different tartans associated with surnames in our class.

In maths we have been practising number bonds and trying to speed up getting the answers to our facts. We have also looked at fact families and the link between adding and subtracting.

Here is the link for this week’s spelling and home learning tasks. P3 Home Learning 7.12.20

Hope everyone has a great week!

P4 Week Beginning 7.12.20

Good morning!
Can you believe there’s only 2 weeks left of school until Christmas!? Time has flown by this term.

Home Learning Tasks

  • LiteracyPractice your reading books! You’re doing great. Just for fun this week, can you read the story starter and continue the story? It has a Christmas theme and I am looking for good punctuation, amazing adjectives (at least 3-5!) and 2 different connectives. I’d also like you to try and vary the length of your sentences eg some long and some short.
  • Maths– On Friday we spoke about probability and used words such as unlikely, likely, impossible and certain to describe the probability of something happening. Let’s practice some more! Try this game called “The Vile Vendor“. You can google search it by typing in “Vile Vendor Game KS1” or here is the link: http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/viewing/L118/index.html#
  • IDL– We started to look at our new topic which is all about electricity. We looked back in time at important scientists and focused on Benjamin Franklin. He discovered lightning was electricity. Can you tell someone at home some information about Benjamin Franklin? We also looked at where electricity comes from and know it can be really dangerous. Go to the website “Switched on Kids” and have a go at the electrical safety in your home game. Here is the link to the website: http://www.switchedonkids.org.uk/

P6W: week beginning 30th November 2020

Hello again,

It’s been another busy  and quick week.  Well done to our Star of the Day, Star Worker and Over and Above recipients.  Keep up the good work!

On Monday we celebrated St. Andrew’s Day. We watched a short animation to find out who St. Andrew was and why he became Scotland’s patron saint.  Then we wrote the story of his life as an acrostic poem and shared our learning with our peers. We also used search facilities to find information on Scottish inventors and inventions during the Victorian era and completed a research map.

In maths we moved on to finding the area and perimeter of composite shapes.  Some of us found it quite tricky but we persevered. Our taught writing task was to create a character’s diary extract.  We could choose to be Queen Victoria or Prince Albert.  We enjoyed reading our work aloud to the class and putting on posh royal accents.

As it is now December, we have started our Christmas activities. We listened to the Christmas story and summarised the key events. Our challenge next week is to make a PowerPoint presentation to tell the story in our own words.

Home Challenge:

  • Log in to Nessy at least twice for 15-20 minutes
  • Play Hit the Button to practise the 4x and 8x tables (Topmarks website)
  • Find what style of handwriting was taught in Victorian schools and practise writing your full name in the same way
  • Spelling focus – soft c words

Green:  cyclone   circumference   cylinder   centimetre   necessary   sincere   difference   instance

Blue:   cinema   century   cylinder   centimetre   decide   recent   balance   entrance

Red:   circus   circle   cylinder   centimetre   bicycle   parcel   sentence   police

Have a great weekend,

Mrs W

P1R and P1L Merry Christmas

It’s been a very exciting week in primary one with the Christmas trees going up and the opening of advent calendars. The children have been telling us what their Elf has been up to before coming to school.

In school we have been busy making our snowmen – Kipper and Biff for the fence and as it’s getting colder we made bird feeders with apples and sunflower seeds in the playground to ensure that the birds don’t go hungry now that winter has arrived.

In class this week we have been learning about the phoneme k and the rhyme ap. The children are getting very good at recognising lots of letters now and the sounds that they make. They are beginning to have a go at making words and breaking words to decipher them. Keep up the good work and see if you can spot any rhymes this week.

In maths this week we have exploring coins, their value and sorting coins. Can you do this at home and try exchanging pennies for coins up to 20p. We have also been adding to make 10.

The story that we have been working on is ‘The Jolly Postman’ and perhaps this week the children could make a Christmas card for a friend or family member and either send it by post or deliver it by hand just like ‘The Jolly Postman’.

Have a fun weekend and super week ahead. Thanks for all your support.

Mrs Carey and Mrs Cuthbertson.

New Scottish Child Payment

From Monday 9th November Social Security Scotland are open for applications for the new Scottish Child Payment. This new benefit will not be payable until the end of February and the date of entitlement is not until 15th February but by opening the application process 3 months early it is hoped that applications will be processed in advance of the eligibility date and for those who are eligible, to receive the payment timeously without unnecessary delay.

This payment is a fixed £10 per week for every eligible child under the age of 6 and will be paid 4 weekly. The age group for entitlement will be extended to older children in stages but under the present criteria it is anticipated in East Ayrshire that approximately 4,000 children will be entitled to the new payment. This could make a significant difference in our attempts to challenge child poverty.

The payment is payable to every eligible child in the household so families with 2 children under the age of 6 will receive £20 per week and so on.

And as this is a new Scottish benefit, it can not be taken into account by the DWP as an income for any other means tested benefit.

P6P Week Beginning 30th November 2020

Hello P6P,

I can’t believe it is December already with only two weeks to go before the Christmas holidays!

On Monday some of us came to school wearing tartan to celebrate St. Andrews Day. In class we looked at who St. Andrew was and why we celebrate St. Andrews Day on the 30th of November each year. We also explored famous Scottish inventors and inventions and created posters and PowerPoint presentations to share our research.

In maths we have been looking at 3D shape nets. We have been building nets, designing nets and drawing them on our own. We also played a nets matching game that everyone did really well in. We also started looking at tiling with shape and will continue with this next week.

We have also been busy with our topic, learning more about Queen Victoria. We presented our findings from our research activity and then moved onto some art work. We have been creating portraits of Queen Victoria using a range of materials to create collages. They are looking great and I can’t wait to see them all when they are finished!

HOME CHALLENGE 07/12/20

I would like you to revise some of the shape work we have been doing in class.

  • Can you draw a range of 3D shapes, labelling all of their properties?
  • Can you create nets for some of the 3D shapes we have been learning about?
  • Can you create a tiling pattern?
  • Have a go at the ‘Shapes in Space’ game. Type Topmarks into google and click on the first link that it shows up. Then, in the search bar on Topmarks search for Shapes in Space. How many points can you get? Can you beat your score?

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss McLeish 🙂

Happy Monday Everyone,

I hope that you have all had a wonderful weekend.

Last week, each of us chose a Parisian Landmark to learn about, so spent some time researching facts which we could include in a poster.  The posters are going to be presented to our classmates soon and I am really excited to learn all about these iconic landmarks.

This Friday (11th December), we have our Christmas Party which will be lots of fun and I am sure that you are all looking forward to it.

Your Homework Challenges this week involve 2 new representations of the i phoneme – ie and y and also some revision activities on Education City.  You will find all of the details in the attached document here:

Spectacular Snowman Art Installation!

Well done to everyone for creating these amazing Snowmen!

The challenge was to make an art installation to cheer up the local community using  plastics that were being thrown out.  I think you’ll agree  that this display  has brought some festive cheer!

P7 had the tricky job of making the basic snowman with Miss Mair, using plastics and hoops.  They assisted Miss Mair in assembling them on the fence.

P6 made fantastic trees from canes and green plastic to add to the display.

Each class decided how to decorate their snowman.

Have a look at the Snowmen, I wonder if you can guess what theme each class chose?

LOVE IS…

BRINGING FESTIVE CHEER!

WE WISH YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A BETTER NEW YEAR!
