P4 RSHP Programme

As part of the Primary 4 RSHP the children were learning that features and characteristics are inherited from parents. We had lots of excellent discussions about how families are made up in lots of different ways. The children were very mature and showed really good understanding.

We all had great fun trying to identify parents from photographs taken around the same age as the children are now. Again lots of valuable discussion took place. I have to admit some were the spitting image!

The children went on to show their learning in a fun way using familiar book characters. This was a really enjoyable lesson.

Well done P4 and thank you all for sharing your photographs.

Dunlop Primary Sketchnote

In November 2019 Dunlop Primary and ECC were inspected by HMIe. We received a fantastic report which highlighted some of the amazing practice within the school. After the initial report was published Mrs Wilson was contacted by our lead inspector, as after some reflection he felt that our Literacy should be highlighted as excellent practice, and to reflect this Education Scotland got in touch to create a Sketchnote and blog. This will be showcased nationally in the Education Scotland newsletter and website.

As a staff team we are immensely proud that our school has received the recognition we feel it deserves. This has been a real team effort and a reflection of strong support that staff, parents and children continue to give each other.

I am immensely proud to have been part of this journey and am looking forward to where we go next.

Primary 7 – Term 3 Learning Targets

Literacy

Reading

Pupils will read The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke and apply the six reading comprehension strategies (prior knowledge, metalinguistics, visualisation, inference, main idea and summary).

Writing

This term we will focus on the genres of persuasive and discursive writing. Pupils will continue to develop their tools for writing (grammar, punctuation and spelling) and apply this consistently across all writing contexts.

Listening and Talking

In line with their John Muir Award, pupils will deliver a speech on an area of environmental sustainability. This can be an area of their choice. A letter will be sent home with more information.

Numeracy and Maths

We will continually revise and consolidate areas of prior learning as well as focusing on application of skills in problem solving contexts. Additionally, we will have a large focus on Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. Below is a list of some key areas within fractions, decimals and percentages we will be looking at:

  • Show where any fraction, decimal fraction or percent lies on a number line
  • Convert between simple fractions, decimal fractions and percentages
  • Find fractions of a quantity
  • Equivalent fractions
  • Simplifying fractions
  • Converting between mixed and improper fractions
  • Comparing and ordering fractions with different denominators
  • Solve problems using percentages

I.D.L

This term we are making the most of the outdoors and working towards our John Muir Award. We have explored our local area and taken part in a range of activities so far this term including pond dipping and den building. Moving forward, we will be learning about geocaching, including hiding our very own around our local area. As part of this award pupils will then use digital technologies to share their knowledge and experiences.

We have also been focusing on Inheritance for Science which includes lifecycles of plants.

Young STEM Leaders

P7 have made a start to their Young STEM Leaders programme which is being led virtually by Stewarton Academy. To find out more about this programme, click on the link here: https://youtu.be/dL_73uZXDps

Health and Wellbeing

Since coming back, we used the context of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse to create discussion on emotional and mental wellbeing and created some lovely watercolour art pieces off the back of this. We will also have a focus on P7 to S1 transition.

Over the next couple weeks, we will have our Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood fortnight – more information on this can be found by accessing the parental information booklets within the ‘Useful Documents’ section of the blog.
