Dean Park – Tuesday Day 2

It was a very, very, early start this morning for some of our pupils (who are now absolutely exhausted 🙂

Today started with a check around the traps we set last night and a study of animal footprints and trails.  We even managed to catch a wee wood mouse as well as plenty of beetles and some other creepy critters!

At morning break we enjoyed some football and rounders together on the large grassy area in front of the castle.

Our second activity was a team raft building challenge using natural materials.  We will be racing these later in the week and checking to see which one is the most effective in carrying Captain Spud across the river.

After lunch we went foraging for feasts in the park and made our own garlic bread and mint tea from plants we found.  We helped prepare and cook the ingredients on a fire.  A quick play in the park and then back to the centre to get organised for dinner.

Our evening activity has just finished and we are all shattered but content after an amazing second day.  Tonight we used flint and steel to start a campfire.  Howie was amazed with how good we were at this but little did he know, we have had a sneaky practise with our John Muir Award Ranger on a Wednesday.  Our little secret! The activity finished with marshmallows, hot chocolate, stories and games around the campfire.

Back now to the treehouse centre for some supper (if anyone has any room after the campfire treats) and an earlier night.  First evening excitement from Monday has left all of the children very sleepy and ready for a good nights sleep in preparation for their big day out tomorrow.
