Dean Park – Friday Day 5

It was a slow and sleepy start today after our disco and 10pm game of rounders but we managed to get to our final activity of the week.  Feeding the baby animals on the farm walk was another highlight of the week and we managed to fit in a quick circle time inside the willow maze on the way round the nature trail.

After that we had to pack our cases and pass our final room inspection of the week.  We finished with a gathering and chat with the rangers.

What an amazing week! The children had a fantastic time and were a credit to the school, their families and should be extremely proud of themselves.  After an extremely uncertain and strange few years, being able to stay away from home for the week and put themselves in a completely new environment was very brave and I cannot be more proud of the young adults they are becoming.  The memories they made and life skills developed will stay with them forever.  Miss Fernie, Miss Sabatini and I had the best week with you all so, Thank you and a big thank you to staff who came along to stay on various nights.

Thank you to our parents and carers, it can’t have been easy to watch your little people transform into the big P7s they have and watching them wheel their cases away on Monday, must have brought a tear to your eye, but thank you for allowing them to share this experience with us.

and finally … Thank you to Mr Leitch for providing us with the opportunity to take our young people on such an amazing adventure and Mrs Armstrong for handling the logistical side of things.

Dean Park Thursday – Day 4

The sun was finally with us today and we too advantage of it.  Our first activity this morning was athletics and we were put through our paces by coaches from Ayrshire Athletics arena.

After that we enjoyed our lunch out on the big grassy area in front of the castle.  We then got to do a bit of fossil exploration and rock identification.

The class have been desperate to get in paddling all week so today we took advantage of the sunshine and went for a wee paddle (or full swim for some people :)) in the river.  I think this activity will go down as a firm favourite for the week.  SOME VERY WET BUT VERY HAPPY CAMPERS!

Our final evening ended with our disco.  We got our party clothes on and danced the night away as well as enjoying games and some singing.

Dean Park – Wednesday day 3 part 2

The children then had the option of watching a movie or the football and are settled in their jammies with duvets, popcorn and other treats.  Another amazing day of fantastic activities and creating beautiful memories with their friends.

Dean Park – Wednesday Day 3

We started off our day with a little competition – testing our rafts from yesterday.  It was a close call but the winning raft to cross the finish line first was the “Mossy Morrow” created by Rhys, Lleyton, Aaron & Reuben.

We then had a fantastic day at Troon beach exploring rockpools, enjoying the spray from the waves and then creating pictures on the beach.  Our natural picture competition was won by Gab, Jake and Josh who created the avengers logo.

Dean Park – Tuesday Day 2

It was a very, very, early start this morning for some of our pupils (who are now absolutely exhausted 🙂

Today started with a check around the traps we set last night and a study of animal footprints and trails.  We even managed to catch a wee wood mouse as well as plenty of beetles and some other creepy critters!

At morning break we enjoyed some football and rounders together on the large grassy area in front of the castle.

Our second activity was a team raft building challenge using natural materials.  We will be racing these later in the week and checking to see which one is the most effective in carrying Captain Spud across the river.

After lunch we went foraging for feasts in the park and made our own garlic bread and mint tea from plants we found.  We helped prepare and cook the ingredients on a fire.  A quick play in the park and then back to the centre to get organised for dinner.

Our evening activity has just finished and we are all shattered but content after an amazing second day.  Tonight we used flint and steel to start a campfire.  Howie was amazed with how good we were at this but little did he know, we have had a sneaky practise with our John Muir Award Ranger on a Wednesday.  Our little secret! The activity finished with marshmallows, hot chocolate, stories and games around the campfire.

Back now to the treehouse centre for some supper (if anyone has any room after the campfire treats) and an earlier night.  First evening excitement from Monday has left all of the children very sleepy and ready for a good nights sleep in preparation for their big day out tomorrow.
