Hello Primary 1 parents,

Primary one have been working hard since we started school in August.

Within maths, we have been learning about patterns and sequences. The children made some beautiful sequences using musical instruments, loose parts, coloured objects and even human sequences. We then moved on to learnings numbers from 0-10. They have been working really hard to form their numbers and to identify what each number represents. We have recently moved on to the concept of measurements which fits in to our topic where we have been learning about the body. We have been measuring our height and weight.

Within literacy, the children have been delving in to their different sounds and some are even beginning to read words with increasing confidence. They should all be very proud of themselves and I thank you for your continued support at home in helping them learn their common words. We have been exploring the book ‘Ruby’s Worry’ where we have learned about the different features of a book.

Throughout our topic this term, the children have been learning about healthy bodies and minds. The children have loved exploring these concepts. We have set up a hospital and dentist practice in the classroom where your child has been able to come in to role. They have learned how to put on bandages, the main organs of the body and their function, simple first aid and the importance of each tooth and why they need to be cleaned. The children have been trying out different fruits and vegetables and have been learning how to prepare them safely during our weekly Fruity Friday event. We loved venturing out in to the village a couple of weeks ago where we were welcomed in to the local spar and we bought lots of healthy goodness to prepare a scrumptious picnic. Our teddy bears definitely enjoyed the experience. The children have participated in daily mindfulness activities where they have been able to have time for themselves and learn strategies to help them feel calm. The children have decided they want to make a change in the school to ensure all children and staff are healthy. We are starting a snack time fitness club after the October break which has been named ‘The Energy Factory’. The children have been working hard to make posters and advertisements for around the school. The children have set themselves three challenges to meet before the end of the school year: to cut up their own food using a knife and fork; to tie their own shoelaces; to tell the time. All the children have been working hard to complete the first challenge and are all beginning to cut their food with confidence.

We have enjoyed doing our weekly outdoor learning lessons where we have been learning about our seasons and different plants and foods in our natural environment.

Learning journals will start up after the October Break and I look forward to being able to

communicate with you more regularly.Sarah McNish.
