Find colours in your house and garden

Look for items in your house or garden that are the same colour,

  • how many groups of items can you find?
  • Do they all look the same shade or are some different for example, light blue/dark blue, light green/dark green?
  • Here are some examples to help you
  • What new words can you learn to add to the colours of shades…

pale, bright, light, dark, same, different?

  • Remember where you found the items as you will need to put the back later!

Colour mixing

This is a good experiment about mixing colours to make different colours.
This is just an example there are many different ways of experimenting using colour, you could mix paint or coloured water. Have a bit of fun with it.

Ask the children what they think will happen? What colour they think they will make? What will happen if?
There have been lots of pictures and talk of rainbows recently, why not create your own colourful rainbow while mixing the colours.
Have a great weekend!

Food and health

It is important to learn about the food we eat and how it might affect our health. Let your child help prepare fruit, vegetables etc for meals, or get new food to try and make a taster plate. Which foods did you like trying?

Talk about where it comes from, colours and textures. How does the food get to the shops? Why is that food good to eat? Is it healthy?

Eating a variety of fruit and vegetables, (Rainbow foods) give us vitamins to keep our body healthy. Why don’t you draw and make a list of different food, showing which is healthy and what is not. You could also draw your favourite food.

We would like to see your pictures!

Developing confidence and independence

Lets talk about the things that we have learned to do recently, e.g get dressed, tidy toys, helped to prepare/serve snack.

You could draw a picture of the learning to share with others.

As we keeping building these skills, you could continue to draw together the learning as a record of achievement for journals. E.g “I can set the table”.

Challenge – Ask your child what they would like to learn in the future and draw a picture of this.

If you would like to share a picture of your drawings with your key worker then that would be great.

Be an author and illustrator

Can you use your favourite colours to draw a picture?

Think about the colours in the story of The Day the Crayons Quit, what things were the colours used to draw?

Make up a story about your picture and tell someone about it, they can maybe write it for you.

Are there any words you can copy?

Take a photo of your pictures and stories and send them to marcia.thomson@eastayrshire.org.uk to be added to the blog!

Outdoor Learning – Ground is Lava

Ground is Lava

This has to be one of our favourite games in the centre. I’m sure you all know how to play it. Why not mix it up and learn about the outdoors while playing. Some ideas are –

Everything is lava except for…

a leaf

a stone

a daisy

a dandellion

something green

something square, etc

the children should find the item that has been shouted out and stand on it. You could make it more challenging by counting up to 10 or down from 10 and your child has to find  the item within the time. Once you have shouted out an object encourage your child to shout out for you to find.

Have fun!
